If you haven't seen "Grandpappy's" website, here's a good link to get you started. http://www.grandpappy.info/hfood1yr.htm
He's updated this to reflect pricing as of Jan 2010. You may be interested in the % of increase in the costs since this was started in 2008.

I did go look at that site and the food list and the prices and increases.
I think the prices have increased for many items far more than what he's got down there.
Right now in our area except for warehouse stores and Aldi--if I want to buy a can of something that isn't on sale its almost guaranteed to be over a dollar--and I mean the 14-15 oz size cans. I think that's truly shocking.
One thing my kids always like--and Hubby who doesn't like coffee likes as well is diet coke. I used to buy 2 liter bottles on sale less than a year ago for .89 or .99. Now I see them on sale at a 'best price' of 4/$5 but more often they are between $1.35 and $1.79 ea. in less than a year. Which is gosh-- almost double what I was paying for them. I keep telling them to try coffee if they want the caffeine. Anyhow-- that is just one item I'm pulling out to look at. Obviously diet coke is not a survival food-but Hubby sometimes think it is in the morning he has a glassful when I have my coffee.
I think overal the list that this guy has says there's been a 6% increase. I'm seeing what appears to be about 30% --but I'm 'guesstimating'. I think its a somewhat educated guess though since I've been shopping for a family for nearly 30 years.
Toilet paper--I used to aim to stock up when it was 50 c a roll or less--now I'm happy if its .62 or less but its normally priced at nearly a dollar a roll now.
We were fortunate that Hubby got a 5% raise last year. His annual bonus however was cut about in half. I didn't get a raise or cost of living and was nearly laid off, though now I'm not working anyhow for a different reason. Our income therefore has dropped. I don't know anyone whose income has gone up in the past couple years and yet prices are going up--especially food prices.
Bedding plants also went up and seeds. I am growing my garden from seeds this year. I used to buy some of the plants but they are crazy high. $3 + for ONE tomato plant??
wow.
I see quite a few things on his list that I can buy cheaper fairly often
Spam, canned chili, instant potatoes, cream soup, fruit cocktail, vienna sausages, velveta, canned veggies, tuna and I see no reason in the world to buy pancake mix.

Hi Lee, thanks for the site. I did visit Grandpappy's and was glad his lists went into as much detail as they did. There were some things on there that I had never really thought about keeping in stock.
The prices he quotes are a little different that they are here on a lot of items.
We are so limited in space at our house that storing a year or two supply is dang near impossible. Under my bed is even packed with home-canned stuff. It is soooo humid here that you really can't store anything outside in the shed. Even if its in a good (supposed to be air tight) container. It was 49 here today and it would still chill ya to the bone because its so wet!! Hopefully we will be able to add on to the cabin in the next few years. I don't know, one in college and one that will be in a few years. So maybe more like 10.
