I was looking at Maine as a possible homestead location one day in the near or maybe far distant future and was wondering if i could get some info straight from some people who know. I was just wondering if any body that lives or has lived there would tell me what they did or did not like about it.
Its been interesteing me lately and i looked up some land and seen quite a bit of cheap land. I could afford 5 to 10 acres now if i wanted- paying straight cash for less than 10 g.
I have my priorities set for where i want to live. It has to be in an eastern decidious forest area, lots of room, cheap land, and thats pretty much it. Short growing seasons can be dealt with. And i enjoy it when it is way below freezing. I do not really like the western part of the country. No offense to anyone but the eastern woods is just my home.
I know Maine has more room than ohio and that is why it interests me. And they have moose and bears. We dont really get those in ohio except for the rare bear. Id like to have that much meat from one kill.
Moving to Maine isnt anything im considering real seroiusly but I definitely am not excluding it. Im probably going to go check it out in late summer or in the fall to see how it is and camp around some. Never been there so i might as well go.
Right now im going to continue to live on the farm in ohio except for my brief stints working out west. But i might want to move someday.
Thanks for any help on the matter

Wow, someone on the East coast besides me?? I guess there are plusses and minuses wherever you are. Maine is beautiful, and far enough from the major urban centers to be considered safe? A lot of New Yorkers moved up there after 9/11 and prices on land went way up, but you can still find land at a reasonable cost. A fair amount of game-loads of fresh water lakes and salt water access. Close to the border of Canada in case you need to Amscray-all in all I think it's a great choice. Go for what's in your heart!

I grew up in the Boston area and moved to Maine about 40 yrs ago, after spending many vacations here. We lived in a Mobile home for about 10 yrs. then built a log home. The summers to me a great although this year we have had a lot of rain. When we bought this property it was on a main road but not to busy, especially in the winter but now it is quite busy and I am thinking of moving on a less traveled road. The beauty is here for every season and gardens produce well. Winters are tough at times. The one thing I didn't like was my long drive to and from work no matter what the weather, as a nurse, I had to get there, and when the weather is bad it is not a very nice drive. Now I am retired and I get to sit and watch the snow fall all it wants, knowing I don't have to drive in it. There is nothing more relaxing as sitting by the wood stove and watching the fire, read a book, or pat the cat or dog in my lap. I have no desire to leave Maine this is my home and I feel since I have lived most of my life here I am a real Maniac, unless my Boston accent gives me away.

We lived in Maine for 4 years which may not qualify me for an opinion, but I loved every minute of it! I would do it again in a heart beat!
Cost of living has gone up a ton up here in Vermont. A ton of people have moved up from Massachusetts and Connecticut cost of living is cheaper up here I suppose. From what I have read above it seems to happen to folks in Connecticut but its the New Yorkers moving up there.
Again like mentioned above if you want some cheaper land stay away from the bigger areas in Maine like Portland and all the vacation hot spots so to say.
A quick search I found these links below.

harder to find cheaper land, even in this economy, cheap land could mean in a area of no employment, unemployment high up here. my advise is make sure you know what you are in store for and make sure you have a ton of money to live here . i live in western maine where jobs are few, seen people come and go. my nearest neighbor is a mile away and my road is a privite road, so maintance and snow removal is my responsibility. it has its rewards living here on our mt but if not prepared it could be a headach so my advise is study up before you come .if anyone would like pics i would be happy to send . offroaddiesel
