I recently read this book and found it hard to put down. It depicts the breakdown of society and one groups efforts to survive it. Great read.

OK, I just finished Patriots last night. While the discussion of the preps was truly fascinating, did anyone finish the book as depressed as I did?
I should add, the book was quite good and a worthwhile read, so my mood was not due to the quality of the reading material.

***Update from Halffast 2/23/2010***
Well, the day has come. I have made a deal with a Hollywood producer to shop Lights Out around to some studios. He thinks we have a great shot at getting one of them to take on the project. We are also working on a book deal.
That means that I need to ask you to remove LO from your site. There is no way that I can ever repay you for the support you have given the story. Of course you will get an acknowledgement in the book and I will send you a signed copy.
Thanks again for everything.

You snooze you loose. :)
Looks like I'll have to wait for the movie.

I think that there is alot of great info to be found in Patriots, but as a novel I am not so impressed. I mean there is a TON of useful info and ideas in there. I think a much better novel in that genre from a literary standpoint would be World Made By Hand. That is a wonderful novel if you are looking to delve more into post apocalyptic type of fiction.
I don't think I caught it mentioned on this exact thread, but Rawles' site is full of all kinds of useful info (I'm sure everyone already knew that). http://www.survivalblog.com/

On the contrary I ended it in an upbeat mood. good guys won. lots of problems fixed that got us there in the first place.

As a gal reading the book, I had to skim through all the descriptive info on the guns; I'll leave that up to the guys to figure out what they need. I was interested in their strategies and pre-planning and how they resolved issues.
I hope I'm not far from my bug out location when things turn sour. I can only hope that it will come slowly; with early warning flags going up that will prompt me to act quickly.

I loved Patriots, and Lights Out also (although I could not read it in one sitting as on-line and hard on the butt and eyes).
Try One Second After - stayed up all night til finished it was so good.

I like to read it for some of the preps, but I'll agree that, as a novel, it ain't the greatest. I'm especially not real fond of being preached at, and the bad guys were all about as deep as the cardboard cutouts at the video store.
All the same, though, I bought the book and have probably read it three times.
Hey... they have assault ultralights... what's cooler than that?

I did like Patriots and loved Lights Out (hard to read on the computer - could not do it all at once and that is how I like to read). I also agree that One Second After was fabulous - also could not put it down and read it all night til finished!
I am going to try the Matthew Braken and Ragnar Benson - have not heard of them at all before. Thanks - always looking for a good read. Learn from everything you can.
I am also starting on some Brad Thor as he worked for a think tank and government and has some good scenarios.
Just finished The first horseman by John Case - very intersting North Korea and virus manipulation - good read.

"Lights Out" is availble as an ebook or hard copy at amazon as well as directly from author. I am not sure of the details of "link policy" so I will provide no links. More info on "lights Out" is available at a site called Survival Monkey. Halffast is a member there. Patriots, new and used is also available on Amazon.

"Deep Winter" by T.C. Sherry as well as the 3 follow up books to it is something you all might like as well. A very interesting read!
