Hubby was wiping the keys & monitor off on the desk top computer. And for some reason the monitor went dark. You can still see & read stuff from the net, but you have to strain because it's darker than normal. Any ideas how to get the screen to brighten back up.Thanks for any info

Have you tried the contrast and brightness settings? Sounds like a dumb question, I know, but you didn't mention it. Controls are kind of confusing on modern monitors - usually a menu where you select the setting and plus or minus buttons to increase/decrease. Some of them even hide the buttons behind a panel - it can be a real fox hunt looking ofr them. Don't know how familiar you are with your monitor or how much fiddling you've done with it in the past. If wiping it down changed your settings, the buttons may be exposed and they got changed when being wiped off.

If monitor adjustments fail, check connections. Don't know how old it is either.

When he cleaned the monitor, did he spray anything on the monitor screen?

I know the blasted things really pull dust out of the air. I've had to take to pulling the computer out every month or two. The computer itself collects an amazing amount of dust around the fan and every crack in the case.

Pat

I know the blasted things really pull dust out of the air Amazing. I use a light duster weekly. Hubby did not come to find it & used a towel to wipe it down.
Thanks for your help (no change) I guess I'll call dell to see if they can replace or fix
Thanks again

Sissy,

I don't know if it is the same on desktops, but on laptops, there are two keys that raise and lower the brightness of the screen when used with the "Fn" key.

have you tried going to your device manager, taking the monitor off line and then readding it? or restarting the computer which could achieve the same thing?

Many desktops have shortcuts on the keyboard for monitor adjustments. Sometimes they are clearly marked on the keyboard by symbols. They usually require 2 keys to be pushed such as the function key and the command key.

Thanks Cinok,
My laptop has the keys you mentioned , but the desk top don't. We're pretty sure it's the monitor. I'll call Dell tomorrow. Hubby read some where on the net, that the same thing happened to a few others.
