The lease is up April 30 and we will officailly be making the big jump to backwoods living. I am starting to sell off useless personal possessions and have started to pack up boxes. We will keep the interent until the last possible minute and then I won't have it for a long while. I have started a few plants indoors now in hopes to plant something immediately when we arrive. So much to do. I am nervous and excited all at the same time.

Congrats! We made a transition over last summer and into the fall. You will miss some things but its well worth it. When you get internet backup make sure you stop by and tell us how things are going.

Best Wishes

We will be building everything from scratch while living out of a tent. It is also in the sticks so no WIFI or cell connections.

WOW...thats an undertaking, I wish you the best of luck, once you are established i hope you come back with pictures and such. I live in the sticks, I have dial up and my cell phone wont work from my house.....but I wouldnt change that for the world ...although I jokingly say to hubby
MY KINGDOM FOR HIGHSPEED....when I am trying to watch any type of video on line. ::)

LOL...I am hoping to sneak away to families homes or to the local library on occasion to get my internet fix. We won't have an address and are trying to keep it that way so we are working out the kinks on establishing a satellite connection eventually.

Let's hope there is a library with internet access near by so you can give us updates.

Congrats!

Rivahmom, that's quite an undertaking! Please keep us updated and if possible, some pictures. It would be fun to keep up on all that you will be doing.

The best of luck to you! I wouldn't live anywhere else but in the country. The country makes you feel like you at least have a little freedom left.

Where are you going to locate to?

This sounds exciting!

I hope that you will be able to live out of TWO tents . . . one to sleep in and one apart where you can prepare food and eat it, especially if you'll be where there are critters! And lets face it . . . critters are part of what makes living in the backwoods "backwoods!" ;D

hmmmm... :-/...that's rather strange? Why is Douglas county, Missouri so much different than any other county in Missouri? Or, In fact, anywhere else in the world? Does WiFi cease to exist only there? When I go long-line fishing in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico, Ive still been able to hit a hotspot on my laptop. What you need to get is an omni-directional Hi-Gain antenna(I buy Hawking Technology), that either plugs into your computer via USB on your NIC card OR the best way is through a separate powered router that the antenna is connected via a special cable so you can hang the antenna outside in a unobstructed view. If you mount this thing 20 ft off the ground say up a tree and run the computer and router when you have your generator running...you could pull in any wifi signal within 144 mile radius of your location. Try www.newegg.com they ship fast and the price for this antenna is $60 + shipping.

You'll love it. We hacked ours out of former timberland (planted pines). Still working on it 10 years later.
I know what you mean about the cell phone - to get a good signal we have to drive out to the paved road. ;D
You're gonna have times when you ask yourself what you've gotten into, but that will pass.
Good luck!

If you're handy with simple tools and can follow simple instructions; I can "show" you through the power of Email, how to make a Hi-Gain Antennae, for less than $25 and if you can scrounge a few things maybe around $15-20. Except for two items on the list, everything else would be scrap from a building project that would probably be in any construction dumpster; like a 5 ft piece of bare copper wire, a 4 ft piece of 1.+1/2 " OD PVC pipe, two end caps, a round stick about 2-3 ft long 3/4 dia smooth like a dowel. Get my drift? that and some PVC glue, sandpaper, a drill and a small soldering iron and solder...you're good to go! Just let me know if interested? I made one of these set-ups for my travel trailer and it WORKS anywhere in north America.

Will that Hi-Gain antenna work to get a signal for cell phones also. I'm not to bright on this matter. I could use a better signal for cell phone & then get wifi through cell company.

Yes, I am very interested in this project. *I've been wondering what to do for an emergency antenna, ok even a regular antenna for down at the farm. *Aluminum sided mobile homes have terrible reception with any indoor antennas. *If you dont post the design send them to me please.

This sure ain't my idea of fun, rivahmom, nor something that sounds even remotely attractive to me... but then all of us can't be made out of the same mold, can we?! * ;D

Have fun livin' in your tent, with no WIFI or cell connections, building your home from scratch... with no address. *If that's your dream, I say forge ahead and grab that brass ring!!

Edited to say: And much love and many blessings along the way too.

MNMom, we will be headed to Douglas County, MO.

Congratulations on your move, Rivahmom! We have property about halfway between Ava and West Plains just off highway 14, and will be out there the first week in May.
Good for you to be building and settling. For us its another few years to pay off and settle family obligations....
Maybe someday we'll be neighbors!
