Bet you thought I was going to talk dirty huh. No one of life's pleasures for my wife and I is clearing land. At the present time we are removing some trees to allow some more sun to come into the garden area and to reach the new solar panels (when I get them) right after this we sat down and roasted some hot dogs and had an ice cold beer. Yum Yum

Looks like ya need some marshmallows to go with that fire, LOL.
It is a great feeling to clear some brush and make the space more usable. We have been doing some clearing around here too, but due to a burn ban we got a big pile waiting for the match..

Brought back memories. On the farm, when I was little, we would rake debris into a pile to burn. My sister and I would bury potates in the coals: then eat them, soot and all. God, they tasted good! :)

We are doing the exact same thing on our farm right now, except we too are in a burn ban and the pile just keeps getting higher waiting to be burned. I've been cutting up as much as I can and putting in the dumpster, I guess in a few weeks doing it that way it would all be gone.
It IS a wonderful feeling getting things cleared away and cleaned up on your own land. It sure motivates me to do more!
Happy cleaning!

I don't burn any brush on my homestead... There's no need to, as the brush piles i make away from my house and gardens rot down in a few years on there own. In the mean time, the rabbits and other wild life have a nice home, and if i want, i can eat a rabbit once in a while.
The folks around here that just kill me, are the ones i see burning leaves next to there gardens!!!

I guess you have no question as to the inteliigence of your neighbors? *LMBO!
I don't burn all the piles, but I have to burn some. We have a lot of Hedge (Osage Orange) and those piles would oulive me so I burn a lot of those. They just season and get harder instead of rotting. I have one pile of hedge that was dozed up 40 years ago when they last built fence and it is still not rotted. I have cut on it for some good firewod, though.
But, if the pile is cedar, I'll sometimes leave it and sometimes burn it. If it's in the pasture, I burn it. If it's in the timber, I'll leave it.

It's hard to find areas without burn rules because of two reasons , one, tree huggers and two and the worst is the idiot that decides to burn on a hot August windy day with no shovel , water or rake. Last year my friends cabin burned down because of such a fool.

We had one just down the road yesterday. It's been dry here lately and the wind was up around 20 mph. The guy burned up six acres of his neighbors land and came darned close to taking the house too. Happens here every spring and nobody seems to learn.

*A few years ago, two guys were burning a brush pile, and it got away from them. *It burned 13 acres that i own, and each guy blamed the other. *They had different insurance companys, and it took me several years to collect for that fire, as each blamed the other...
*All of my fences and tree's were burned, but the fire dept. did contain the fire mostly on my land as it has road on 2 sides...

Oh yeah, It's always somebody elses fault. I'm glad you were able to collect on it at least. I don't suppose they came over and set some new posts, or planted any trees for you?

Oh yeah!
last year we burned Over 100 fires on our property!!
Most were not as large as the one pictured above. Got an area that was cleared by loggers back before I bought the land and it was a right mess.
It's quite a chore piling and buring it all, but now we're getting a new pasture.

I can remember that when I was real little on our Southern Illinois hill farm, Dad was burning a brush pile and the wind picked up and it got away from him. It was real excitin the way I remember- I think I was about 5 ( circa 1950-51 ) and still remember Dad using the 8n plowing breaks in the fields. It funny what you remember . To this day I can remember what field. I bet I could walk to the exact spot I remember.

The REST of the story is.... Another neighbor that has ajoining land to mine, that ALSO some of it burned... He told the ins. company that HE owned "all" the burned land, and they paid him off, for MY land... Then when it FINALLY got sorted out, the ins said they had paid him, and i should go collect from HIM!!
Well, in the end, they DID pay me, and i don't know if they went after my neighbor or not, but that neighbor doesn't even speak to me now, let alone anyone helping me fix the burnt fence!!
As a side note: Yesterday, a guy not far from here was burning a brush pile... It ended up burning 70 acres along with his neighbors house!

Wow DM, he sounds like a heck of a nice guy. I guess he showed his true colors, didn't he? In my opinion, for what It's worth, you're probably better off if he's not talking to you. Sorry to hear about the folks that lost their home. I realize that accidents can happen to any of us, but it seems like there's way too much of this stuff going on.
