Every so often we get folks coming to our way of life and asking about building and cost.. the answers we give them are all well informed and always useful but very seldom if ever is here a continuing story on how it goes.
I have been following a building story on another forum( I hope this is not a breech of forum etiquette ) but for those want to build small on a limited budget and do the work themselves this is a great story. The guy is a pro plumber but it is full of good ideas.

I had to read through the whole thread. Thanks for posting the link. I would love to build that.
By the way, I think the only time posting a link to another forum is bad etiquette is if it is in competition with this forum.... as someone stated in another thread, this forum relies on income from the google ads and when a member is driven to competing forum, this forum won't receive the revenues...sorta.... So, I don't think a "building" forum link is bad etiquette, but I could be wrong. I often am lol.

I really liked it.. a couple of items that Inoted.
First he let the DW block the view of the backhoe.
Second he commented that he was from NE Oklahoma and the frost line was ( i think he said 15-20 inches ??) Did you see how he just ran the septic laterals thru the trees.. ? I wouldn't have had the nerve to do that.

Yeah, I saw that. When he was talking about the backhoe, I thought he was just going to park it out the window so he would have a nice view of the backhoe but the DW would wan t a view of the woods. lol... either way, it was funny. I saw that he ran it through the trees, but he seems to think it will be okay for a few years at least. And you can also get some stuff to keep the roots from growing into the line, I think.... But, like you, I don't want to have to redo it in a few years.

Oh... Also.... the thing I liked most was the siding.... I think that is a neat way to go. And he only has 6K in it so far and has budgeted 15K with all new materials.... interesting.

The price was the big reason I brought it over to this forum.. Lots of good folks here are focused on how much it would cost.. this showed what can be done.

I agree and that was a goo idea. I dismantled two barns (with the help of a friend) and got good lumber. I had to buy very little and built mine for less than $5,000 which includes my $1800 in solar.... so, it can be done... I just wish mine looked as nice as this guy's! :-/

I'm a member of that forum, too. I'm Jared on both forums. I am buying land about 1 hour from that guy that's building that house. I contacted him not long ago and got permission to come out and see his house, but I haven't yet. Once my wife and I close on the property and start our cabin, I'll probably go see him. That's an awesome forum, btw.

Sounds like fun and that sure is the way to do it Cinok!
Back in '98 my wife and I dragged a little travel trailer up onto some forest land we'd bought and we lived in that trailer for a year and a half while we built our straw bale cottage.
The heck with going into debt! Just built the place yerself.
It's easier to do than most folk think!
