Boo all over the economy! We can't get a serious buyer for our house for sale, so we will be renting it instead of selling it to buy land, for a few years anyway. We are sad about this delay BUT moving on...

Does anyone have any advice for renting a place that is appropriate for living somewhat self sufficiently? Where we are looking (near Port Angeles, Washington) there are a lot of country houses for rent. Does anyone here rent, and how do they negotiate having animals and a garden with their landlord? We have had trouble before with having a garden with our landlords and were able to comfort them by reseeding our garden spot with grass. We have excellent rental references. Anyone got advice?

No advice, but in a similar position here too. Husband lost his job, we are moving to another area( unsure where yet) and will be renting. We are hoping to find something that allows self sufficient living. Good Luck!

It is possible. We rent a farmhouse and an acre. Our landlady is an old farm woman who was farming during WWII. She is very supportive, and we have a great relationship. . We have chickens. She'd probably let us get goats, maybe a pig. We have a 4500 sq.ft. garden. It is important to work cooperatively with her. She doesn't like dogs, so we don't push the issue. She doesn't want her lawn dug up, so we don't. Find someone sypathetic, and work together on the details so you don't piss them off.
