not just WANT/LUST/COVET this when I have a perfectly good machine already.

There are just some things that are so much easier to do on one of these old machines - and besides IT IS BEAUTIFUL.:girl_wacko:

I can't tell you that you don't need it when it is obvious that you do need it. lol

Supposedly it needs a new belt but that should be pretty easy to manage - we are hoping to be able to pick it up Sat afternoon after I get off work - Sat is my day in the barrell so I have to work till noon and then it's about 80 miles to where it is. And actually the price seemed very reasonable to me - for the cabinet alone I would pay that much.

My grandmother had one just like it that she machine quilted on but one of my aunts got it when my grandmother passed - it was the only thing that she owned that I really wanted.

Thanks guys for reinforcing the need in me instead of the want

We did - picking it up Sat. It's treddle and made by the Davis Sewing Machine Company for Sears and Roebuck round 1910. I am stoked:)

I don't know if Lehman's still carries the belts, but they used to. In case you forgot, it's a round leather belt, not a flat one.

Lehman's used to sell new treadle machines, but I don't know if they still do. Singer still made new treadle sewing machines up until just the last 10 years or so.

Nice find! You can tell it has not been used much when the decals are still intact as yours are. Also, that type is an excellent one, as there is plenty of swing room on the treadle. (A shorter swing makes it hard to get going.) Those old machines were made with such precision that a little fine machine oil will have it running like new!

If you get a ruffler attachment, it's so much fun to use that you'll be dreaming up things to put ruffles on just so you can use it! (Warning - men do not generally appreciate ruffles on their stuff!) :meeting:

Of COURSE you need it! What if the power goes out? What if those cheap plastic Chinese-made sewing machines falter - and there's never any replacement parts for them, to force you to buy still another cheaply made machine? What if you are sewing quilt pieces together and you get caught in a week-long snowstorm? What if your last pair of jeans rips? You can't go out like THAT! Not to mention the leg exercise you'll get, which is good for not only your legs but your heart! Better and cheaper than a treadmill!

I'm jealous of this find. Can you tell? :D

Oh yeah, you need it. Nice machine and sturdy, made to last. One thing tho, you'll have to get rid of that little statue guy or he'll get mighty dizzy with his head bobbing back and forth, lol.

Don't think the statue is part of the package but if he is he will be relegated to the garden. All the wild birds can use him as a perch.

Thanks. We know it needs a belt and that is an easy fix and I am hoping that with some cleaning up and oiling and maybe a little "fiddling" with it that it will work - DH says that even the first sewing machines were works of mechanical genius so therefore tricky to work on. And I am sure there aren't any extra parts comming with it but after searching the internet some yesterday we are fairly confident we can get extra bobbins and such and probably find advise on line for tunning that pretty baby up.

PS - I plan to use it for machine quilting - newer machines seem to have such a hard go of machine quilting and hubby will also use it for some of his craft projects - bless his dearly departed mother's heart - she had a Masters degree in Home Economics and she really taught him "home economics" along with cooking and how to sew.

Oh, that's a pretty one. :swoon:

Are you familiar with GVS? It's a mail order company whose clientele are mostly Plain people. THey sell stuff the old 5 & 10's used to sell... hair dodads, baby things and cloth diapers, shoes & socks, unmentionables, stationary, books & toys. You get the idea. They also have a really nice selection of notions and sewing supplies including belts for your "new" machine. They're $4.49.

They don't have a website but they have a phone number to request a catalog. 1-800-398-2494.

Oh, and I don't know if you do any handwork but they have a big selection of Aunt Martha's transfers and quilt patterns too. I just love those. :)

Mesquite Bean, yes I do hand work - am embroidering a quilt top right now but will probabaly not quilt it on the Machine - Mother is a member of a quilting group that gets together once a week so they will probably quilt it as one of the projects - they do beautiful work.

And now I am lusting after your transfer patterns - they are getting harder and harder to find as are supplies for hand work - I have to make a special trip to town to Michaels or Hobby Lobby just to get embroidery thread and such - what was Walmart thinking when they quit carrying that stuff.

Tex, I edited my previous post for clarification. ;)

They, GVS, has a big selection of Aunt Marth'a transfers. The nearest HL or Michael's is almost 2 hours from here.... that's how I learned about GVS. :sarcastic:

We just got home with my new toy - it is even better than we thought - looks like it will work perfectly after we put a new belt on it. It has a box with all the attachments and even the original Certificate of Guarantee from Sears and Roebuck (Davis was made for Sears) dated 1911 - it is Minnesota C - not the top of the line but still should be a great machine - almost all of the pretty gold decorations are on it and look almost new - the cabinet is a jewel. Can't wait for the new belt to get here so I can try it out but DH has already turned all the "stuff" manually and the shuttle and bobbin are intact and working - OH JOY - can you tell I am a happy camper.:girl_wacko:

I'm glad to hear you are happy.

The treadle I have now is my second one. The first one I had also came with the box of attachments.... all kinds of 'em. It also had the original certificate, sales slip, freight bill of lading from the manufacturer to the store. Also, in one drawer there were a couple pages torn out of magazines that were full page ads for treadle machines, so I figured the lady had shopped around before buying it. I wish I still had that one. It was a much better one than the one I have now.

Hope you get your belt soon. Have fun!!!
