View Full Version : Something wrong with my cat...

It's 11:30pm. My cat was crying around 11pm. I yelled from the bed for him to go back to bed(as they do this alot). I heard his nails on the floor, didn't sound right so I got up. He was crying and was inbetween the chair and end table with his face by a concrete statue, standing funny. I picked him up and his eyes were kind of wild looking he was hunched up. I tried putting him on the table to eat but he couldn't stand right. I put some baby food on his mouth and he licked it and then started eating his food. He still couldn't stand right, his legs were tucked up funny and out to the sides. He ate a bunch of food then seemed ok. Was walking and rubbing on the cupboard then jumped up on the pile of clothes where he likes to sleep. I put him on the couch and petted him and he was purring and kneading his paws on the couch. I went in the bathroom and came out and he was back on the chair. He's sleeping now. I tried searching low blood sugar, didn't find much. This is similar to what's happened a few times over the past years. Too nervous to go to bed now even though he's sleeping. Ever have this with any of your cats? He's 17 years old. The first time this happened was probably 6+ years ago. It's happened about maybe 5 times since. Last I think was like 1 1/2 years ago. Lasted really long, he kept falling over and his tongue was out that time, then he ate almost a whole bag of treats and was fine. The vet the first time took blood work and found nothing wrong. Thought it was low blood sugar. The next few times the vet didn't even want to see him, said he couldn't do anything since the episode was over. The last time when it was really bad I didn't have transportation but was going to have a neighbor take me but since he started eating and it was about 90 degrees out that day I figured it better to keep him home and not stress him any more. Everyone is sleeping now except me.

My daughter had a male cat that had kidney stones.
He did pretty much the same thing.
Gently run your hand down his belly and see if you can feel his bladder.
If you can it's full and he can't relieve himself.
The emergency vet told me it was common in older male cats.
If that is his problem then a vet will have to put in catheter to empty the bladder.
Good luck and best wishes for your buddy.
Keep us posted please.

He's urinating so I think he's ok there. He's sleeping again. Was up this morning acting normal, ate, drank water, went back to sleep. It's a nice day out. I think I'm going to sit on the porch with him for awhile. Maybe he needs air. It's been a loooonnngggg winter.

Glad he's doing better now.
Maybe you were on the right track with low sugar and the baby food did the trick.

I think I'm going to sit on the porch with him for awhile.

I don't think God deducts the time you spend with small children and pets from your allotted time in earth.

This may seem like a pretty common sense question but sometimes it's the simple things that cause problems.
Is there any rat poison or anything down where he can get to?
With him being so old, it could be a # of things.
Hope he is doing better!

Good thing! Or I'd be out of time already:)!

No poisons anywhere. He is getting up there. Although I've heard some cats live to the age of 23! He seems to be ok now. I made sure he ate before going to bed last night:).

Why don't you google diabetes?

As a human who has type 2 diabetes, I can tell you that sometimes the blood sugar goes too low. Part of the diabetes is that your body has lost the ability to regulate the blood sugar.

You can buy a tube of sugar paste at the pharmacy and put some in his mouth if you wish. I have never used sugar paste: I have individually wrapped hard candies in my purse instead. Every couple of months I feel poorly and then I eat the candies and I get a few more at my convenience.

Yes. Sugar is a LITTLE faster but I do not think, practically speaking, that there would be much of a difference.

Is there catfood out all the time, or would that end up making him gain weight? Excess weight makes diabetes worse.

They have food out all the time. No weight problem. Actually he should weigh a little more than he does. But he doesn't have many teeth left and he's a picky eater. He doesn't eat canned and he doesn't like me to wet the dry. He just swallows it whole I guess. He had blood work done last Aug. and everything was normal.
