Anyone have experience with Neurotin? My Dr prescribed this for my neck pain, trying to avoid doing another fusion. It seems to be helping with pain, but I am having this weird side effect, for lack of a better explanation it feel like I am fading in and out of my body at times. Thanks for any advice or help you all might have.

Teg,

I just saw your post for the first time...

I was on Neurontin in 2001 for about 4 months to help combat a nerve injury to to a broken wrist and subsequent RSD/CRPS. The idea at the time was to calm hyperactive nerve impulses that were causing me extreme pain.

It is pretty potent stuff so I am getting that your neck issue involves nerves of some kind.
Neurontin is also used to treat kids with hyperactivity although I am against this. I also have heard of people being perscribed it for emotional problems.

Side effects? Not sure what it did to me because I was on a host of other drugs at the same time. I just know it is very potent and you can't just stop taking it-you have to wean yourself off of it. The fading in and out? Watch it -it may take awhile for it to get into your system and balance itself. I think it may take awhile to start working properly.

I don't know if I was any help or not, but I would read about the drug very thoroughly and watch for possible side effects and or emotional ups and downs while on it. Report it to your dr if there are any problems because like I said you just can't stop taking it. Everyone is different in how these drugs react with your chemistry.

Thanks for the information, the side effects have calmed down a bit, just a bit groggy at times, which the wife doesn't like but not much I can do about that. The neck is steadily getting worse as the disks above and below my original fusion are wearing out quicker than they anticipated and it's causing a lot of headaches, ringing in my ears and numbness/tingling in my arms and hands. The Neurotin seems to be working but I'll have to see how it goes long term. :)

Teg,

2 of the side effects of Neurontin are drowsiness and abnormal thinking, but also if you are taking any other medication, you could also be experiencing a medication interaction. As CapeCMom said, it should not to be discontinued abruptly. Also, it works best when doses are taken as closely as possible to the prescribed time, to keep a constant level in your body. Were I in your shoes, I'd notify my doctor, they need to know how you are responding to the med., and it also might put your wife's mind more @ ease.

Hope this helps,

Thanks I plan on making an appointment soon, but being military it takes a while to see your assigned Dr, you can do sick call but then you get some random Dr that doesn't know your history and things get convoluted. I don't plan on stopping them abruptly and our base Pharmacy does a good job of cross referencing meds to make sure nothing "should" conflict. :)
