Today i went on to check on my property to make sure everything was as i left it last.

I had alot on my mind and sometimes I find that a drive in the country helps to clear my thoughts. So i took the long way to my place. This is when i started to take note of peoples living conditions and their shelters.

The first place I came to was at a stop. An elderly man lives there. His fencelines are always stopped up with trash because he is a corner lot and stop all at once. People dont care either cause they will throw out their trash since they are at a stop sign. I saw him piddlin outside with some livestock. This is when i also noticed that he lives in a fit over camper. He had the jacks on some cinderblocks. I could see that there was an area that he probably gardens cause it was perfectly square and looked tilled. I had passed by there a gazillion times but the reason i saw all this is because he cleared some thick brush. I thought to myself that he is probably content on his little homestead. So on I went.

Next i came across some another property that sort of neighbored the back side of my old property. I had once talked to the owner of that property to ask him if he had built the nice metal building that was visible to me. He said he had and that they lived there full time now that they had a roof over their heads. If I remember correctly it was like a 16' x 24' building with a shed roof. It was still there and cute as can be. They sit on about 45 acres which is nice but alot for me. And on I went.

I then came to this one property that has always got my attention and always made me evaluate my own wants and needs. This is a 5 acre piece of property. I know that because I once went to look at property adjacent to it and the realtor told me that the two properties on each side of me were also 5 acre parcels. Anyhow, I had to pass by this place to get to and from my old property. There was only a security light on a post and a mini motor home that parked under it. Many a night in passing all i could see was a soft yellow light from the mini motor home. I thought to myself, "I'll bet he is happy right where he is". Again making me re-evaluate my own circumstances. Well he was probably smart in doing that and is probably debt free because he probably saved his money. There is now a very nice home/metal building sitting right there on his property that he probably paid cashed for. All because he probably paid cash and owes noboby anything. I said to myself, "With just a little sacrifice on space look what he has now." It was an eye opener. By the way, the mini motor home is still in its place.

There is another man way down the road from there that lives way at the back of his property. He lives in a little storage building that he made his home. All nice and snug with no one to bother him. You cant see his home from the road but i have seen it before when looking at another property one parcel away from him. At night, the only things that you can see is his security light on his long driveway. He is probably saving his money as well for future purposes or perhaps early retirement.

I came to the next and probably most interesting living space. I pass by there all the time to get to my place and i dont know why I have never noticed it. I had noticed 2 old school buses there but never paid any detailed attention to it. But i did today because now i was looking at peoples living conditions. They have several little out buildings but this one little shed that is probably a 12' x 10' is right up against the side of that bus. When i really slowed down i could tell that they had cut a doorway into the side of the bus that attaches to the shed now. I thought by far that that was the neatest thing. They are probably saving a fortune too by not having to pay anyone rent or paying a lifetime on a mortgage.

I finally got to my place and thankfully everything was where i last left it. My eye sore of a storage trailer didnt seem so bad afterall. The only reason i say it is an eye sore is because it needs a coat of paint inside and out. That is another project that i look forward to doing. I am either gonna paint the interior walls or remove the existing interior walls and replace them then paint them. Same for the ceiling. The people who had this trailer before installed some light fixtures but those are coming down as well. I am paranoid about older trailer's wiring installations. They also cut double doors to the side of the trailer but I measured a 36" wide house ext. door that i have that i would like to see in place of one of those doors. It would allow for much easier access for me. I would like to do away with the regular entry door or maybe just board it up. It has potential but I dont want the outside looking too nice because if the county officials pass by i dont want them thinking that they can hike my taxes. Anyhow I am excited about that project and look forward to it.

Im still piddlin with the cabin. I spent a few hours there measuring this, doing that walkin' around and then it was time to go. The part that I hate. But on my way out i took the other long way and just coasted down the road when i came across another different living situation. There is this little lofted barn that I had seen before in passing that I always thought was so cute. Only this time i was able to see more of it I guess because they cleared some tall grass and brush but i noticed that they built an about 4ft picket fence. The enclosed area looked like a garden. They had also landscaped around the little barn and i just loved it. I had been toying with the idea of getting one of those little lofted barns in place of my cabin and truthfully I never let go of that thought. My wheels just keep spinning.

Has anyone ever had unusual living quarters? Pics to post? I would like to hear about it and Im sure other readers would like to hear about them as well.

Anyway, sorry for such a long post but i just wanted to share my interesting observations that i had today.

Wow sounds like you had a very nice day with eyes wide open. I think when folks slow down and really see things around them with open mines it allows one to get some really great ideas for their own lifes that they might had missed it not taking that extra effort to just slow down from the rat race most all of us are living in these days of information overload. Thanks for the post was a wonderfull read. Rick

Jen- What I have noticed in the past by doing what you just did is check my preconceived thoughts on what looks nice and what is functional and looks nice. Most Americans and the county governments ,AKA building codes , want to tell us what is appropriate for us to live in. I have always thought this to be crap. That's another reason why I won't live anywhere with covenants. I have seen some real nice small places for just two people to live in but what makes them look junkie is crap laying around outside. I do recognize that a junkie looking place will bring down the sale price of a nice home but being creative and somewhat neat with a small place should not automaticly disqualify you from being among million dollar homes.

Funny you should mention this. Our "backwoods home" is in burbs, the oldest neighborhood in our little town. Not only do I not envy the folks in the 3,500 sq ft gated community show places (where an agile person could make their way down the street by leaping from roof to roof) I simply cannot imagine living there. I grew up on a place where, if a car was deemed unworthy of further repairs we would just drag it to the back pasture as a parts resource (or, in my case, as part of the playground even though the day I broke out the rear roll up window on an old T-Bird was not a good day for me). I truly envied one of my buddies who had no fewer than a dozen "parts cars" lined up. And the family farm that my grandparents had -- we're talking tractors, combine harvesters, old windmills. What a great place!

So, I guess this is why the city feller gave me a note last week saying that scraps of plywood, pallets and other odds n' ends could no longer serve as a fence and that I should go and get me some store bought'n fence. In his letter, he was nice enough to offer to have the city do the job if I couldn't get it done in ten days or less. I'm tryin' to figger out why they would want to lean on my propity after they got done? :-/ I decided to make them happy simply because city fellers should be leaning on shovels, not my house! ;D

Now, most folks wouldn't want to live where we live simply because of the neighborhood "do it yourself pharmaceutical" purveyors, not to mention our "English as a second language" friends. But what we have found is that these are peace loving folks who don't desire to stir up a lot of attention amongst the city fellers. But I have figured at least one very important thing about these folks and others who live alternative life styles:

These folks aren't putting on airs. They aren't pretending to be somebody they're not. I have to admit that I kind of like that attribute in a person.

Around here where i live you will not get away with living in a bus, camper or any thing else that these asses around here dont want to see. They will act like a friend and turn you in as quick as they can get to a phone. In my township no one is allowed to build on less than five acres and mobile homes must have a certain roof weight load or its not gonna happen. We also get alot of city people driving by that own camp/hunting property that i swear have never seen a horse or live stock of any sort of that matter. I always give them somthing to look at LOL. But any way my point is people should be able to live the way they want to and i think it is great that their are places left for people to do just that. Oh this one is a real kicker too their is a limit to how much live stock you can have per acre and yes chickens are included too.Its a bunch of crap exspecially since we are 10 miles from any town and a very small town i might add.
Sorry every one but that felt too good to vent about this area.

Dreams are what we color our lives with. They inspire us and give us energy. They challenge us and we find a kind of ingenuity that helps us to reach higher until we find that place of peace and contentment... in a shed, hooked up to a schoolbus, or in a mansion... It's all good, you see.

Our dreams become tangible reflections of who we are and what we hold dear. Some folks forget how to dream and I think they become lost along the way... When i read your post it reminded me of the words... and I looked through a glass darkly... But it would appear it's all coming together and in time, you'll see where you've been trying so hard to get to...Home.

Bearhugs,
Grizzy

Jen,
I loved your post - and your attitude! I've been around so many people who would say "eeeeeew - look at THAT shack!" and it's a terrible, twisted way to think, not to mention awfully judgmental of something they don't understand.

I agree that people should be able to live the way they want to. If a McMansion is your thing, fine and dandy. Then you'll want lots of zoning to make sure nobody with imagination or common sense moves in next door! Otherwise, find the places that are still free and make sure they stay that way!

In 1979 I was half of a married couple and we moved to Arkansas. His folks were fairly well to do Iowa farmers who belonged to the local country club & made quite an effort to have their home looking exactly like their neighbors, only a bit nicer whenever possible. (My combine shed is bigger than YOUR combine shed!) ;)

Anyway, I'd read in Mother Earth News how some people lived rent free just by finding abandoned houses and asking the owners if they could live there. We were saving money to build, and this seemed like a fine idea to me. About a mile from our land I found this little stone house with weeds grown up head high. We asked around and discovered that the lady who had built the house (yep - she built it herself!) had passed away. Her kids were in another state. We contacted them and offered to clean the place up in return for free rent and they said OK.

It took about six pickup loads of trash to clean it up, and we glazed windows, patched the roof and painted the outhouse, but it was a lovely little place. I discovered the lady was quite a gardener - she had wild azaleas, perinnial pinks, a wahoo bush, roses - all sorts of wonderful stuff that started to thrive after we cut the weeds down. There was no running water, except for what we "ran" outside to get, but there was an electric pump on the well, so it wasn't too bad. There was one electric circuit, so I had my microwave oven and a couple of light bulbs with pull-string switches! I loved that place!

Needless to say, when his folks found out where we were living, they purchased a "nice" trailer house for us to put on the land. I was terrified that I'd never get my house built and that we'd be stuck in that thing forever!

you'd be surprised what you can get away with here. On the south side of our town are at least 15 houses that would be great for the voluntary fire department to have practices with. Some of them look like they have to be cleaned up before they can be condemned. The creek had toilet paper floating in it. Yesterday I noticed a real ramshackle trailer a little back, but it would have such a nice spot for a garden, only there never was a garden there. I see very fat women walk around on occasion. One house looks neater, and last year the man tilled in front of the house and the woman made a big flower bed. some of the houses are literally in ruin, some stand because they can not make up their mind which side to fall on, it is very sad looking. when we bought our place, the real estate agent made sure I did not see this part of town, but drove me to the "farm" on a lovely, scenic and out of the way road. One house blew up, it was used as a meth lab. another has a nice green lawn, it is on the bottom of the hill and the dumptruck of manure for my garden could not make it up the hill so he had to dump half of it in their yard. I am forever keeping an eye out for good garden spots and am forever wondering why people do not plant more gardens. One house with a small yard had two horses in the yard.If they had their head on the porch they could sweep the road with their tails. one day those people came by and asked us if they could leave their horses to graze on our place because they had to go someplace for a couple of days. They never came back, two weeks passed, the horses were destructive and the mare mean, then a neighbor came by and said, are those M.D's horses? we said "yeah". He said, the sheriff is looking for them.
One old trailer I drove by in summer, a really obese person stepped out on the porch, stark naked. I was so shocked I could not tell you if it was a male or a female.
