I have tried making my own laundry detergent using soap, but with our super hard water the soap builds up crude on our clothes. So today I made some using Orvus Paste.
Orvus Paste is a detergent sold in feed stores for washing livestock. I buy a gallon for $21. It is also sold in tiny jars as Orvus Quilt Soap at ridiculously high prices in quilt and fabric stores. I have used it as a laundry detergent and it works well by itself.
Since I don't have much storage room I decided to make a highly concentrated laundry detergent.
1 cup Orvis Paste
1 cup water
1/2 cup washing soda
1/2 cup borax
Heated Orvis and water together over low heat until mixed, then stirred in soda and borax. Poured it into a small container and stirred occasionally until it cooled. It cooled to a soft soap consistency.
In a front loader I only need to use a scant teaspoon full for a load. Seems to be working out well.
