Yurts would be a better place to live but I had my own tipi (18 footer) for about 15 years and have stayed in it during a two week winter camp at a -10 degrees. with that said the indians lived in them all their lives but you had better be able to stay in a confined area. Is it you alone ?

if you plan on being a nomad,,and living on the lean side you need to decidewhere you want to live ,, staying in a tipi or yurt in one spot is not a good idea... those that lived in these knew their territories,, followed the weather,, water and wild game,, as well as knew where the good soil was for growing some of their own food there are many ways to live in a yurt .. bubble to bubble and if you use more than one linked together you need more than one vehicle for transport...if you want the tipi then you[re gonna need to know how to store your food so that animals cant get to it.,,etc etc
Martin,
I have lived in my tipi style Army tent for 2 years in northern New England and love it. I am learning all the time about how to deal with this life. I did not put in the inner liner correctly so the smoke did not rise from the campfire so I had to put in a woodstove. The only other problem I have encountered is clean air circulation so during the damp seasons it get smelly.
I will be glad to answer anymore questions I can.

I think Claire Wolfe had a really good article in a past issue of BWH about living in a yurt.....she told about getting it second hand and rebuilding it on her land....and what it withstood and all that....it was a good and interesting read and would be worth you trying to get a hold of a copy!
