View Full Version : Tractor Question

This weekend was the first time I've gotten to use my Massey Fergusson 1529 in warm weather. I thought the smoke that belched out every time I started it was due to it being cold but still there is a cloud of smoke each time I start the tractor. I do hold the starter so the glow plugs warm up.
Is this normal? My Mahindra never did this but it also had a timer for the glow plugs and a light would go off signalling it was ready to start. Maybe I am not waiting long enough? I worry about wearing out the glow plugs or hurting something else if I wait too long. (remember I am NOT mechanical!) I do use the "fancy" diesel in it also.
It's under warranty - should I have them look at this? If I remember right the guy that delivered it had it smoke when he started it and he passed it off as having just travelled on the trailer in what was quite cold weather in early December.
Thanks!
Debbie

As far as I know all diesels will have that smoke when first started. After it starts it should clear up quite a bit.
Sadly, all of the small diesels are going back to "indirect" injection, INSTEAD of all going "direct" injection. This means they need more starting aide to get going... (read glow plugs) I could go on and on about this, but.....
I'm thinking you need to read your owners manual, do what it says, (glowing the plugs as long as it says to) and as long as your tractor starts easily, there's nothing wrong with with your tractor...

Yep, I did check the manual and I am starting it per instructions. I'm glad to know this is natural with diesel engines but it's curious why I didn't notice it in my "old" tractor so much!

Deb, your tractor sounds normal to me. My car, old as it is, always smokes white for a few minutes after starting it. And it will not start, even in 90 degree weather, without the glow plugs. When it is cold out, I hold the glow plugs on for 5 or 10 seconds after it starts to smooth out the idle.

What do you mean by indirect injection? That doesn't sound possible in a diesel.

They have been building them that way on and off for many years now, thing is, now EPA says they are cleaner indirect, so all the small diesels are going that way...
The fuel is shot into a "prechamber" instead directly into the combustion chamber...
