We are a military family in Alaska and have recently moved off the military post and into a home that we own nearby. We have 2 acres (one is wooded) and willbe here for about 2.5 more years. We really want to start "homesteading" but have to be realistic since we know we will have to leave within a few years. My plan is to start a couple of raised beds in the spring and our kids want to have market animals for the local 4-h (bunnies, chickens, and maybe a goat or two). We would appreciate any advice, especially from those of you who have lived in the Alaskan Interior and understand the climate constraints. Thanks everyone!

If you are near Fairbanks, join the community garden. It's a great place to learn the tricks of gardening in Alaska. They rent garden plots cheap, and you will be surrounded by people whom have been raising gardens for many years. I had a plot there for two years, and it worked out great. They have a shed full of tools that you can use, and all of the advice you can handle. *;D

Two words- greenhouse. Ok, one word. ;D
getting the kids involved with smaller livetock with 4-H is a GREAT IDEA!
Although I didn't have animals when I was in 4-H those many years ago, the things I did learn in 4-H still help me every day!!!

But perhaps YOU could be a group leader for some kids in your area with some critters that you know about.
