I live in a very secluded area and have for the past few years been preparing for whatever happens. I do live less than 1/2 mi.from a very large lake.
I have all the bases covered except drinking water. My electrical service is suspect even at best. My well supplies my needs for everything except for drinking. Is there a good ,reasonably priced, filter available that could supply about 20 gal. a week? Thanks, Ray

Check out the water section of this site. Especially the homemade Berkley filter. Berkley filters are highly rated. This link gives info on how to save some money using Berkley parts. http://drum-runners.com/

While you're there, check out the other references.

Spend some time at this link. http://www.grandpappy.info/wwater.htm There's a lot of how-to there, including a discussion of a solar still. One of those may be a good option for you. Google "solar still" for more info and several sites with plans. Oh, he also has info on several commercial filters, including the Berkley.

Hope this helps.

I'm thinking of finding a homestead on some parched, no water piece of land and getting or building one of these:

and composting toilets, and a water recovery system.

If anyone could pull that off Steve, it would be you!

Steve,I took your idea on dry area homesteading to heart about 15 yrs. ago. The reason was to get in an area other people didn't want to go to. It has worked mostly because banks won't loan money to build with no good water. I built a beautiful "A"frame and finally got a well with non-drinkable water, all a little at a time with no loans. The well does everything in the house,I just have to haul drinking water. The house is 24'x26' or 624sq.ft. with 164sq.ft.upstairs.
The area has had negative growth the last 15 years and to me it's a good thing, and it's what I hoped. I have to haul about 20gal.a week.I am
dry and happy.....Ray

When I was a boy, we used to visit relatives out in Utah every summer. They had no well, and we had to go to the "old place" several miles away where there was a spring and fill up these milk cans with water and take them back.

The house had no running water.

It was kinda nice.

Berkleys are very well made. I do not have one, but I do have a Katadyn. Available many places.
Check out The Gravidyn.
