And we are looking for partners in our venture. We have a good off-grid solar site, 30 acres of level pasture and/or arable land. Driveway, well, septic and shop are in. Pumps are pumping. The water is good. Mucho fresh air off the Pacific.

Are you talking about Mendocino county? We drove all the way from Alabama to there in 1996 to retrieve my stolen car, but it was really nice there. I read later where that county was the first in the country to ban genetically altered crops....I may not have that exactly right but it sounded like they were on the right track.

Is your cost of living there really high? Can't move there....just nosey! best wishes!

Yes, that would be Mendocino County. The cost of living in Mendocino is not unsimilar to the San Francisco Bay Area although it may be harder to make a living there due to the lack of industry and a relatively small population base...which is, of course, why we like it there.

Hello Nichol

I guess I'm your counterpart, on the opposite side of the state. *We're also starting our own natural, alternative energy homestead, but in the lower Sierra. *We too are in Oak woodland, which I think you would immediately recognize. *Show us some pics of your place. *Here is one of mine. *I'm standing next to a Fuji apple that I'm hoping will bear fruit for the first time this year.

Yes that looks familiar...deer protection...and we use gopher baskets as well. We have what we call a coastal scrub ecology. Ceonothus, coffee berry, huckleberry, coyote brush close to the ground. Lots of different kinds of grasses. Bull pine, shore pine, monterey cypress, "grand" firs are present as well. Our site can be windy so we are in the process of putting up a wind screen for a first try at bare root fruit trees. Can't seem to copy pics to this reply box. Maybe later.
