We all know that grocery prices are going up, but those of us that still have to buy at meat at the grocery store are going to be in for a rude awakening.

Looks like people are going to be switching to other sources of protein......
Beans, beans the musical fruit....
It's amazing how much manipulation comes from a monetary system. Why is that chicken that you raise worth a different amount from the grocery store? It costs almost nothing to raise a chicken once you get a good start of them.. But if you go get the same thing at the store it costs a small fortune to buy one to cook for one meal. Somebody is sticking it to someone somewhere.

More the reason for me to get off my duff and get some chickens. I am almost there.
At least their eggs would be a good protein source in the first year or two-until I had enough offspring to start harvesting.
I agree with you on the idea of manipulation. I don't get it at all-why would speculators do this to people? I don't buy the premise that it's just a hedge against inflation. Between food and gas prices, it is going to hit some people very hard.

Speculators do it for the money.

I don't really watch the meat counter since we raise our own lamb and chickens. When I have a Costco rebate I buy pork. And, I can usually buy a nice sized tenderloin that when cut into small roasts can last us for months.
But, what I have noticed is increases regularly is mayo. I use to get 2 for $4, but yesterday I went shopping and a 32oz jar is almost $5!!!
That's expensive tuna salad.

That mayo price was high, wow. I haven't bought any in a few months, better start watching the sale ads closer.
I get our chickens and ground beef from a local farm, but use the grocery store for everything else. Think I'll can some of what's in the freezer then start stocking it with more before the prices go up any higher.

I've noticed that too. We're still able to buy frozen chicken breasts in bulk for a more-or-less reasonable price (about $2.00 a pound), but beef and pork are ridiculous. For a while I thought that I was getting a great deal on the 99 cents/pound bone-in leg quarters; then I realized that with the edible portion and bone weight, it wasn't that great of a deal.
We're having to make a conscious effort to have meat be an ingredient in mixed meals rather than a "main dish", which saves us a bit since it makes sure we aren't eating more meat than we need.
