Hi everybody.
I am looking to purchase a "retreat" in North Arkansas near the Mountain View area. We live in the Houston area and are looking to go to here on weekends and establish our retreat for when TSHTF. Was wondering what is like there. Looks nice... but what are the people like? My wife is asian... Will we be welcomed at church on Sunday, 1st Baptist, or will we find a burning cross in front of our house :-[ . I was raised in the Mountains of PA. and love ozarks. I like Texas but it is just to flat and boring here. Please let me know any feedback.
Kind Regards,

I have a lot of family that live in Arkansas. I have always found the people there to be really nice and helpful. I don't see any reason why you should be worried about "burning crosses" I do suggest that you take a visit before you purchase. That way you and your wife are comfortable with the area. Also I wouldn't mention to anyone that you had this fear. People might become offended when they think you thought so little of them over that matter. JMHO, Raven
I guess I should also say that I grew up in Texas. I have heard and seen way more things of that nature happening there.

don't you just LOVE it... oooh how scary we are, I'm in MO, we're scary too you know. Kind of makes you wonder why they think they woulkd be safe here in the hinterlands if TSHTF. Maybe we'd get hungry after all that burnin and eat'em.
I think it would not be the fact that thw wife is ASIAN, that would be their problem. I think it would be the fact the husband is a bigot...against "rednecks".

Well rightslanted I live close to the MT View area in an area called Fox. LOL you wont have to worry about burning crosses. To be honest though folks are very slow to warm up to others with welcomes, but they are friendly enough. Most areas around Mt View area very nice if you like remoteness and peace and quite. many folks here like me are transplants themselves...so you will be able to meet new people. lots of churchs in area so that will help you introduce yourselves. I am tied up for a few days with work but if you want to pm me I will help you with some information and suggestions on areas to make your visits here more efficent and fruitful. I think you will find the area to be quite nice.....Matthew

if i were going to a new area with no personal contacts and if i were concerned about social issues like you mention, i believe i would invite the sheriff out for a cup of coffee and doughnut and have a nice long talk -

Well thank you for the posts so far. I know I might have offended a few. But to be honest it is a fair question. We have lived in remote places in the past and my wife was harassed at the market, the DMV and we would get comments from stupid people at the local dinner. So if I offended anyone I am sorry... But I will not put my wife through that again.
As to going there to visit, we have and will continue to visit but as we experienced in the past, people are nice when your a "visiting". After you move there people do tend to show their true colors.
To the people from Texas: *Don't be offended so easily. I lived most of my life in mountains or near the mountains. I just don't like the flatness of where I live. I PREFER Mountains. Otherwise Texas is great!
Thank you Matthew I will contact you.
And to fnfredux... Sorry you are so angry... I am a redneck. I grew up in the Appalachian Mountains. But as I said it is a fair question due to my past experiences, and yes even in my home town, the south, and Northern California. And it was not just a couple people, that I can handle.

well, then I guess it's about time you came on out where people are judged by what they DO.
We have a little diner in a tiny town pop probably around 400, about thirty miles from me. Just openned about 6 months ago, strange menu caramel pecan buns and various stir fries are the specialty... The owner chef is a Fillipino and guess WHAT...everybody in that little town eats there, know why? She's a good cook.
The town nearest me, pop6000. We watched as a Mexican family openned their first establishment in the US, that was about four years ago. Guess what there are now THREE other restauants ( all owned by them)that are located in three other large(over 5000 pop is "large" here) towns around the area. Know why? Good food. Sure there are some people that are idjits, but for the most part, things here are much better than they were twenty years ago, the idjits generally moved on when the furreners STAYED.
Sorry you had so many problems, but here in this area we have Chinese, Viet Namese, Mexicans, Blacks, inter-racial couples, Amish(believe or not some folks don't LIKE THEM), gay couples. Mormons...
And of course an EYEtalian (as they say here) Catholic and a New York Jew...
hey, this place is becoming much more like where I grew up, I just realized that! No wonder it feels more like home every year.
And NO cross burnings.
I think this area of the country causes consternation in some because of misconceptions.
BUT... do check out everything in advance, here in MO the "mule traders" are still around. Don't know about AR, but the Ozarks include MO, may be some there too.

I live in the Springdale area and have lived in this area for 18 years, moved from Dallas and would not go back. My wife is from Houston, she has been here for 12 years, she loves it also.
I don't think you have to worry about the burning crosses or any other of those type of problems. Its not the same as it might have been years ago, I do mean years and years ago.
I just brought some land about 2 years ago in a small town called Kingston, not far from Springdale, and the people there are very nice, even thou they have lived there forever and I am new there, and will always be new, but that does not mean just because I am new, I am not welcome.
Spend some time in the area and see what you can find, I think you will love it, and not miss too much about Houston, no 610 loop around here,
And, yes, the SHTF will come, sooner than later I fear.

Rightslanted - I am also an ex-Stone County resident (Also from Fox!) and I was a yankee import. I got kidded about my funny accent a few times, but that was it.
There was an Asian youth who was an exchange student in Mountain View, met and married a local girl and stayed on. The only gossip I ever heard about them was that their Asian-Angelo mix kids are lucky because "everyone knows" they're going to be so smart with that mix of genes. That's a stereotype, but at least it's not a negative one!

I live and work a ranch ini eastern OK. If I was to sell this ranch I would move to either Northern Arkansas or Southern Mo. Both areas are nice. I have been looking at land on Beaver Lake which is near Eureka Springs. I know you have lots of transplants in Northern Ark. Most live near or in Bella Vista area.

Yes debbie lots of folks settling in that area...it is really nice. Mt Home area is seeing a large increase in retirement folks, another gorgeous area. Ark can be a little behind the times but really pretty nice place to setle down in...low population still these days. Eureka Springs is really a neat small quaint town....LOL full of non-natives who fell in love with ozarks...:)

I used to own some land in Ozark County Mo- the northern side of Bull Shoals lake.looking across the lake to Arkansas. Had to have to fishing licenses depending on which side of the lake you were on. the arkansas boys really checked. Mo didn't.
great place. Real esate people take you out in a old pick up good for driving thru the field and hills and take you to supper at thier house end of the day.
County seat *of Gainsville has around 2000 people.. really great place. the whole county has about 14,000. don't why I left . I like it better there than where I am at in Lebanon/Camdenton *middle of the state.

We used to live in N Arkansas. As far as finding a church you will have to shop around. We did experience an incident as members of a certain "church" not because of race but because of my husband's disability, we just found another church. There are a lot to choose from, you will be able to find one where you will be welcomed. The only downside we found to living in Arkansas, were some of the laws for registering *a vehicle, (you had to have so much information it always turned into a multiple day process of standing in lines), and the check cashing regulations were really archaic. But those things may have changed. The joke about North Arkansas we used to tell was that it was full of great folks, most of whom moved there from Chicago and Texas. *

Rightslanted... let me say this and don't take it wrong. Okay?
If you decide to move here and keep calling it "Noth Arkansas", folks will think you're from Boston. We will probably let you "pahk ya cah", though. :D

Rightslanted , I had to laugh at your opening statement and your right it is a fare question. I have never been to the midwest or east for any length of time but here in Washington Idaho and Montana , It's the californians that some people have a problem with coming in. So I guess it just depends on where you live.

First thing I do when I leave Cali is get a coal fired furnace and melt all my license plates down into little ingots. Then I'm going to shoot them. :o

I wish more people thought Arkansas was too scary to move to. We are being overrun with yankees. ::)
