I am a big fan of rimfire handguns. I have owned several over the years and shot many, thousands of rounds of 22lr through them. Currently, I am down to two that will stay with me for a long, long time.
The first is a 1962 Ruger Single Six, old model. I found it in my local store last year. Upon inspection, I could see that it was well used. The bluing was thin all over and worn off in a couple of spots. Good, honest use. It only had the LR cylinder with it but when I slowly thumbed the hammer back, I was rewarded with 4 clicks. :D Those of you who know a little about old Ruger's know the significance of that statement. ;) A friend in TN found me a 22 magnum cylinder and I hand fit it to the revolver and it timed perfectly. This is my woods walking gun, mostly, though I need to find some good leather for it.
http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj310/slagueux/Revolvers/DSCN0481.jpg
The second is a S&W 422. These guns, and their closely related cousins the 642 and 2213 series, were produced by the company from the early 80's through the mid-90's and were replaced by the 22A series. I used to own one of these before. In fact it was the first handgun I bought myself when I was of age. I stupidly traded it off on some gun that itself has been traded off for .... Well, you get the idea. I picked up a mint copy, again from my local shop, just recently and it is a great shooter! It shoots every loading just fine, though likes the CCI Mini Mag and other higher velocity rounds. Man, I am glad this model found it's way back to my safe.

So, what are some of YOUR favorite 22 handguns?
I have owned a pile of rimfire handguns, Rugers, Colts, and many other semi auto's and revolvers, but the two that have been with me since the 70's are,
S&W M-18: It has put more meat in my freezer than most folks get with a rifle. It's no longer pretty, but it still shoots "pretty" groups and and has been 100% reliable since new.
High Standard Victor: I won a LOT of small bore pistol matches with this semi auto and in fact, it's the most accurate handgun i've ever fired since i bought my first handgun in 1971. It's ALSO put a pile of meat on my table since i bought it. I have NO idea how many spuce and ruff grouse i've shot with it, and ptarmigan too. "One day" i shot 32 showshoe rabbits with it, my friend who was with me, got 11 with his shotgun.

I own a few rimfire handguns, two Ruger Autos a MkI and a MkII Government Model. I also have a few Hi Standards B, HD Military (several variations) a pair of 10X, and several Sentinals including one MkIV Magnum, 4 magnum Deringers. Several S & Ws 5 screw K22, 4 screw K22, 3 screw KitGun and my pride and joy an early post war 5 screw Beakert (That's a pre-Mdl 35 J frame with 6") 5 Screw Combat Masterpiece (pre Mdl 18) and a 4" Mdl 48.
But like you my favorite belt rider in rimfire is a SA, Colt New Frontier Convertible with the 4" bbl.

The last rimfire revolver i bought was a Ruger Bearcat with LR & magnum cylindeers. they came out in '94. The mag cylinders would not time and were recalled by Ruger in exchange for 40 bucks. i kept mine. Sold the gun a few years later for $350(paid $100) and the guy who has it now is selling it for $1,000. there are only a very few left with both cylinders and unfired, new in box. I dont own a rimfire handgun now but have been looking for an early 3 screw. At one time I had a large collection of 3 screws, some quite rare.

Fancifowl, I never knew the Bearcat was offered with the magnum cylinder. I do have a friend who sent one off to a well known gunsmith to be converted to WMR. It took quite a while to get it back but it turned out really nice.

That was the only offer. There were not many released and most went to Ruger retailers as incentives from the Ruger distributers, like Davidsons. You buy x number and they give ya one for incentive. I belonged to the Ruger collectors and kept up to date on stuff! Red Eagle News(Chad Hiddleston) helped. + I had a subscriptio # for a short time. There are only around 25-40 left, only around 1,000 hit the market.
Bet ya didnt know they made a proto type Baby Nambu too(in .22 cal), boy, I wish they had made up a few of those babies but it was to be released at a time of bad vibes for the gun industry and old Bill said dump it. The only one is in the Ruger* collection.

I have a Ruger Single Six and a Ruger MkIII, and while gun snobs may look down their noses at them, a couple of Heritage Arms Rough Riders. The rough riders are my serious working guns. A Birdshead 3" barrel model rides in my jeans back pocket here at the farm. She's loaded with Remington Yellow Jacket LR rounds. And a standard 6&1/2" model that's more accurate than my Single Six. It's kept loaded with magnums, Winchester Super X 40 grain JHP's.

Nothing wrong with those Heritage guns. Like you say, they are working guns that you are not afraid to get dirty. I used to have a similar, cheap single action 22 made for Herters.

I've got a mark III 22/45, It is a cadillac. The only problem i had when brand new was the magazine was hard to eject, after i ran a couple hundred rounds through it no problems.
best auto loading .22 out there for the money.

I like it very much. It's a 6" fixed sight model, completely stock. I had an older model years ago but it got away. Some people over on rimfire central gripe about the LCI - loaded chamber indicator, but I think it's a good feature. And they don't like the fact a magazine has to be inserted for the weapon to fire. The mag release is new also - no longer a heel release on the butt, but a real button on the side much like a 45 auto.
It has already drawn blood. We had a troublesome rooster that beat up hens and killed another rooster. The Wife (she who must be obeyed) wanted it gone. 5 rounds of CCI Stinger as fast as I could pull the trigger did the job. Old habits die hard.
It came with a spare mag, and I bought a nylon ambi holster that holds the spare mag as well.
The ballistics charts in the 2005 Guns and Ammo Annual say that with the 6" barrel you can get Hyper Velocity Long Rifle (CCI Stingers, Remington Yellow Jackets) performance thats almost as good as the 22 magnum out of a revolver.
Get one. I promise you'll like it.
I have a Mark III 22/45 that I like a lot, had to buy some aftermarket grips from a guy over at Rimfirecentral since the original/stock setup was a bit thin for my hands, but I've really liked it ever since.

My first gun was a Ruger Single Six 22/.22mag 3 screw.
Foolishly traded that off for a Mark 1 with a 6" bull barrel.
Traded it for something else but I'll be darned if I can remember what.
Bought another .22/.22mag and it was so bad the rear sight was adjusted as far right as it would go and still was way off target.
Sold that one and bought a Mark II slab-side.
I WILL NOT sell or trade this one.
Another .22/.22 mag is on my short list to buy but I really want an older one so it may take awhile.
I also bought a Beretta Neos. That was a big mistake . Had to send it back to Beretta for repairs the week after I bought it then sold it as soon as I could.

So, what are some of YOUR favorite 22 handguns?
First, thank you for answering a question that just came up for me yesterday afternoon. I was at a public shooting range. The line was very crowded; so I decided not to shoot. (Too many sideways pointing muzzles!) Went to one of my private gun clubs, instead and spent the rest of the afternoon shooting my 35 year old Smith & Wesson Model K-17, 'Masterpiece' 22 LR revolver.

While I was at the public range two young ladies, standing off to my left, were firing a black pistol with a low ejection port that I just couldn't recognize? It was doing a good job for them, too. Every time that black pistol fired it would throw the brass a good 15 feet; and was just, 'dusting' my boots.
I went through: Ruger, Beretta, SIG, and a few others; but, I left the range not really knowing what it is that these two girls were firing? Your picture just answered the question of me - An S&W Model 422!
With today's incredibly high ammo prices - and for cheap range quality ammo, too - I find myself doing more and more dry-firing and 22 LR pistol shooting. True, I've always been a proponent of practicing with the pistol that you carry; (and I do!) but, the principals of grip, trigger and front sight control remain the same. I've found that if I'm, 'on' with the 22 LR then I'll, also, be on with the 45 ACP.
My favorite 22 LR pistols? That Model K-17 I used yesterday; and it's big brother my 70's version S&W Model 41. (It's the long barreled model.) Beautiful gun! It's a natural pointer, too. If things continue the way they're going I have a feeling that I'm going to continue, 'squirreling' centerfire ammo and do more and more with all of the 22's.

A Birdshead 3" barrel model rides in my jeans back pocket here at the farm.
SPEAKING OF BIRDSHEAD - HI STANDARD used to make a model they called the "NATCHEZ" it was a birdshead gripped 4.5" (IIRC) and it was one of their western style revolvers but 9-shot double action with a swing out cylinder. I've had the jones for one of those for years and have only actually seen one in person-but it was downright A B U S E D!
If anyone spots a nice one somewhere for sale would you let me know about it?
I don't recall all the minutae but I think they were limited production from about 1958 through '62 maybe.

I have a Smith Model 22a and it shot great right out of the box. It shoots bulk federal without 1 hiccup. I couldn't be happier.
I used to have a couple of Colt SA .22's and they were real shooters. As usual, I let them get away from me. Same for the Ruger Mk1 bull bbl. I now have a Heritage Rough Rider that is a great shooter, and a new 4" MkIII Ruger that works really well too. Like others here I use the .22's for most shooting, saving the centerfire for more serious work.
I feel the lowly .22LR is one of the rounds ever invented. Accurate, reliable, and effective within it's parameters. It's indispensable.

Not only that but with the sheer variety of .22s available today there is a .22 RF for every occasion out there.
Some of my favorites are the Aguila Colibri and Super Colibri (both quieter than a Sheriden pellet rifle) CCI Short CB which is not only quiet but cycles flawlessly in my Remington Speedmasters, the new Reminton LR CB with the YELLOW JACKET bullet, the 60 gr. Aguila SSS, and my old favorite General Purpose rd the Winchester DynaPoint (also my absolute favorite and 1st choice for .22 WMR)
And if you feel the urge or the need to get downright medieval with your RF

Just picked up a Ruger 22/45 MK3 Target and love to shoot it, also have an old Heritage 22 LR. and a J.C. Higgins 9 shot with 4" barrel. The J.C. has an owl on the handle Very light almost feels alum. Shots great. I let a single six get away from me and i,am on the hunt for another. I love to shoot rimfire.

No, never heard that one. But if you recall the assassination attempt on President Reagan Hinckly used "EXPLODER" .22 LRs which were made in the 70s and 80s a jacketed bullet with an explosive compound inside. The bullet that actually stuck Reagan was the larger part of one of these jackets after the bullet hit the door frame of the President's armored Lincoln and detonated. The jacket fragment was flying sideways and caught Reagan at a rather oblique angle. The President did not even know he had been hit thinking he had broken a rib when the Secret Service Agent hit him with a flying block from behind getting him in and on the floor of the limo. It wasn't until after the agent got him up and sitting down that he noticed a spot of blood on Reagans white dress shirt and imediately redirected the motorcade to the Hospital, he had already ordered to the White House.
The only person actually stuck by Hinckley's direct fire was Press Secretary James Brady, a Secret Service Agent and a DC patrolman were both like Reagan struck with fragments of the bullet jackets of the bullets that had already struck the LIMO.
In the 70s I bought a few boxes of "DEVASTATORS" which were explosive .22 WMRs specifically for carry in my hideout gun of the time a Hi Standard .22 WMR Derringer.
One night I fired two of those rounds into a tree stump from about 15 feet away. The incindiary flash was impressive where the bullets struck but there was virtually no penetration.
Back in the Buffalo Hunting days, some hunters were said to have drilled out the noses of the .45s and .50s and placed .22 RF blanks in the noses. I never saw any reports of this from the time it was supposedly done but I would guess that the expanding incandescent gas from the BP detonation could tear a pretty mean temporary wound cavity, and you'd still have 400+ grains of lead to penetrate and break bones and make big deep holes.
That's why I like WIN DYNAPOINTS so much in LR and WMR. They are reliable consistent performers, you know they are going to expand and penetrate pretty much the same every time.

I have a S&W 622 that I'm very pleased with. I'm thinking about having some custom grips made for it, the stock ones are UGLY, other than that I love it.

I am in the market for a Single-Six, with both cylinders, preferably an older model.

I read about the lighter flint in the bullet thingy in Unintended Consequences, BTW, great book for those who haven't read it, if you can find a copy. Never tried the lighter flints myself.
.22 handguns... I gave the wife a Charter Arms 6" many years ago. I've shot it more than she has. After receiving that she still didn't learn not to say, "Oh get me what you'd like.". :D
I don't have many .22 handguns. A Browning Challenger I bought new in '73/'74, a Kimber 1911 Rimfire Super, and a scoped .22 barrel for the Contender.

dademoss is correct; the Higgins was made by High Standard, essentially a Sentinel model. If you look at the two side by, you'll see the resemblance.
The owl is (was) a TM of Iver Johnson, initially of Fitchburg, MA. I worked for that company for a short time in the late 60's, thus have a few in my collection (not as shooters though!).
Oh yeah, forgot the thread subject.
My favorite is my pre-K22 S&W, 6" .22. Made just before they were labeled w/a model #.
My everyday user is a Walther/S&W P22; light to carry all day, but not the most accurate of beasts; it is, however, minute-of-chipmunk when I need it.

From what I understand, it is not available yet and when it does get in it will only be available in paperback for $34 when it becomes available. Can you imagine an over 800 page paperback book. There are no more hard copies. That is what is so hard to find out there and that typically go for well over $100. still worth it for everyone .

Right now I have an Advantage Arms .22lr Conversion kit for my Glock. IT does okay and saves me money, but I really would prefer a Browning Buckmark. I just can't justify it in my budget at this time. :(
My local dealer has one in his display case, right next to the Ruger Mark III. After handling them both, I liked the grip and heft of the Buckmark much better than the Ruger. It fit my hand like it was meant to be there, just like my Glock. :D

Sorry to hear about the Mosquito issue, I enjoy mine quite a bit. SOme tips that I have heard are that you need to make sure you keep a solid wrist when firing, do a touch of feed ramp polishing, make sure the light spring is in and that you don't have the new plastic mags as these seem to be an issue, most of these the factory should take care of really, but they are the tips I have picked up with mine. :)

Had a trailside that i absolurtly loved. Figured this would be as good.
Doesnt the manual specify big spring for minimags? I dunno. Too late, all gone.
I've been using the smaller spring and using the cheap Armscor 36gr stuff with success, I tend to tweak and take the owners manual as advice but not gospel. ;) :)

I have heard that ruger will sell you one for around a $100. The wmr 22 came out in 1959 ( a few years after the first SS) and Ruger actually made a SS in WMR only for ahwile. Ii belive, then the 22LR SS was changed to accept a wmr cyclinder. 1st SS came out in 53 i think, so putting a WMR cyclinder in an old LR only SS might be worth checking with Ruger first as I think the slugs is slightly different. serials numbers should tell you how old it is.

Thanks. My bro. Has a convertible, wmr cylinder slid into my gun just like it belongs there. Havent shot it, wont till i know for sure. Just thought, long barrel, should send em down range nicely.
I did shoot last sunday with lr. Tried mini mags and some super x.
Making the silhouttes go bing! Was a blast. Hit one of those little exploding jobbies, impressive boom.
Shooting cheap makes it much more enjoyable for me.

Yep Rimfire is really easy on the pocket book... I like the WMR's alot and use them in my SS.
If i do play at a higher caliber, it is a 38's in my vaquero- thats fun to but cost more.
