The Federal homesteading act ended in 1976 except for Alaska that ended in 1986.
Alaska offers as a state program for “Staking” Cabin sites in some areas, but do not consider this homesteading.
You have to be a resident of Alaska and as soon as the land has been surveyed you will have to pay market price for the land.

Today you will have to buy your homestead.
Do to the current economy and collapse of the real estate market there are many deals to be had.
Choose the location you want then with a little study and help from others you will be able to purchase your dream homestead.

Check out the WIKI on the homestead act below:

ALSO, in every case that i saw, the state of Alaska had a map with what was forsale, you went out and looked at it, then bid on it... From what i saw, it was all small parcels of a few acres each, and it was like buying a few acres in a "future" subdivision... It was a sealed bid for the land. Highest bidder got the property...

I looked at some of the sites, and none of it was anything i'd ever want! From what i saw, it was speculators that bought it up, hopeing to sit on it and make money on down the road...
