Our home is on a private road, which is causing us some headaches with our address. Our address exists and we get mail here, but it "doesn't exist" at the same time. Ordering items or subscriptions from the internet doesn't always work because any sites that "verify" our address before shipping say our address doesn't show up in any databases (whatever that has to do with anything). We also have problems receiving packages from UPS and FedEx because our address isn't googlemapable, gpsable, or anything else.

Is this just normal for addresses on private roads or is there anything we can do?

It is common for rural private addresses, and a lot of just plain rural addresses that are not on a private road.

You can go to the UPS office that delivers to your area and explain that “Your” driver seems to be having trouble finding you and you are there to explain. {same for fed-x}
The fire department can give you your 911 address , see if it is the same as your USPS address .

I have the same problem with the motor vehicle division , the address they use does not exist and the tags never got to me until I went the the office and had my “account” flagged and the tags sent to another address { the correct one } I now do this for each vehicle so that I get my renewals.
It was no use to try to correct them because if their system says thats your address then they will not change it. If pulled over I have to explain this to the officers ! Because my DL has the correct address.

It's just something we get used-to out here , most people can't understand that we only get mail delivery 3 day a week !

We haven't had any problems with the DMV. They happily changed my address on my registration with out asking for any proof, and I just needed a bill with my address to get it changed on my drivers license.

FedEx will call us (since our number is listed with our delivery address) and tell us they don't know how to find our address and we can give them directions. UPS will just take the package and send us a postcard telling us to pick it up.

What do you mean by 911 address? Do you mean my physical address? Now you have me wondering if I even know my own address. :)

Here in our county, new addresses are assigned by our planning department when a home is constructed. A lot of the older home weren't assigned, just picked a number and it's stuck. However a lot of times people will assume since their neighbors number is 1234, then their number will be 1235 and thats not necessarily true. Check and see what address is on your tax bill from your county and then contact the local government to find out how to get it more active in systems.

Good luck...it may take a while to get it to circulate.

Here's an idea.

Use Google Earth to locate you driveway or the entrance to your private road. Down at the bottom of the screen GE will tell you what your latitude and longitude are. You can call your local FedEx and UPS offices and give them the coordinates for their GPS units in the trucks.

Might work, might not. Just a thought.

You also might try using an on-line phonebook to see if you're listed, such as:
www.411locate.com
www.anywho.com
www.411find.com
or, here's a whole list of finding people sites:
http://www.arborwood.com/Category/Search_and_Directories/

- just Google your name! If the on-line phone directory doesn't have your address listed, SOMETIMES you can request that they put it in if there's a link on the page for it, or they'll have a "contact us" link.

On the downside, once you're listed on the internet, ANYONE can find you. :P
