Hi all. It has been quite a while since I posted but thought I could get some feedback from you. I have finally decided to move from the texas coast to a homestead.

I found some property in Hughes county oklahoma that looks ideal, it already has gardens, orchard is fenced, etc.

Is anybody familiar with this area? (Around horntown and wetumka). Having lived in deep south texas all my life I don't know how I will like the winters.

Any info would be appreciated.

Pretty country! I went to landsofoklahoma.com and did a county search on Hughes county and saw a lot of nice property for sale. Very nice. Low rolling hills, lots of trees and pasture, plenty of water.

I then went to city-data.com and looked at Wetumka, OK. It said that in the month of January the average low temp is 29 deg. and the average January high temp is 48 deg. So that is really not too bad but you may think differently about that.

I have thought of OK. myself but the tornado's scare me a little. I have had several friends suggest OK. as they have spent some time their themselves. I guess land is cheap.

Thanks for the reply tsj, you pointed me in good direction to get more info.

MM, I am also worried about the tornadoes, wifes family lives in OKC and was there for the big one a few years ago. missed them by three blocks! They can tell some horror stories though. :o

Yep, Wetumka isn't far from us and it's considered in our area. There are some beautiful places here. We like it very much. No one bothers you. As for Tornadoes yes we have them. Where we are there is a high ridge to the Southwest of us so when a Twister comes this way it bounces over and misses. (Tapping wooden head) LOL. Other than that this is the most peaceful place we've ever been. If you like Hunting and Fishing.... well you'll like it here.
But build a Tornado shelter for you and your family for safety and less worrying. * *

BTW you can build pretty much anything you want to here without hassles.

Red D, That sounds great! When we visited the place I got the feeling that it was a peaceful down to earth area. It sure is pretty too. Being a flatlander I loved the hills and views.

This place has a basement that is backed into the side of a hill but open in front, would that suffice for a tornado shelter?

You may want to build a Safe Room in the basement to be extra sure. But there are many other places in this Country where that's a good idea also. You and your family know in your hearts if this is where you want to live the rest of your life.
I sincerely wish you only the best.
