I found an interesting video on Netflix: "No Impact Man"
It's about the trials, tribulations and victories of a small family in NYC who made the very difficult decision to live a minimal impact lifestyle. Their motives are a bit different than the self reliant mind set but it appears to me that they're coming up with similar results: Better health, better harmony (I think) and less reliance on consumerism. They learned that we don't need so much stuff.
Here are some reviews of the book he wrote (http://www.audible.com/adbl/site/products/ProductDetail.jsp?productID=BK_AREN_000979&BV_UseBVCookie=Yes).
