If you've a family get together, or bar-b-q to go to and want to take a quick dessert...take a Triffle! They are so tasty and a great dessert for warmer weather.

In a clear glass mixing bowl, say a 4 quart, take an angel food cake, cut it into approx. 1 1/2" squares or tear the cake into smaller pieces (I like to cut it into pieces, as seems to look prettier in the bowl).

On top of the cake gently pour a can of fruit cocktail (juice, too), as you pour, be sure to do so evenly, and along the inner sides of the bowl. With your spatula, you might want to press the fruit & juice gently so the cake below will better absorb some of the juice.

Next, gently pour a can of cherry pie filling, on top of the f ct. using your spatula to spread it evenly, but you don't have to press the cherries for absorption.

Whip up a large box of instant vanilla pudding per instructions, and pour evenly over the cherry pie filling.

Finally top it all with cool whip, spreading it evenly and to the sides of the bowl.

Step back, and you can see and count all 5 layers, I think it makes a pretty and inviting dessert. You can top the whipped cream with sprinkles, but we like it as is. Pop it into the frig. to cool (or you can have the 2 cans of fruit already chilled, so you can make it then take it directly to your get-to-gether). You're done!

Last thing, use which ever fruit and fruit pie filling you like best, it's not set in stone what to use...after all, it is nothing but a triffle of this and a triffle of that!:yes4: Enjoy!

It's one of my favorite desserts. A friend of mine makes one similar to yours-she uses the tropical fruit along with those little oranges from a can then adds coconut. I ask her to bring it when she comes for Christmas. You're right, it is such a refreshing dessert!

Is it mandarin oranges your friend uses....Actually her combination of fruits sounds good too, especially with flaked coconut sprinkled on the top. A lady from England brought her version of Triffle to work years ago. Instead of using pudding she made custard from scratch, and used peaches and I think fruit cocktail as her fruit. Needless to say, she took home an empty bowl, as have I when ever taking it to what ever.:)

Thank you-yes mandarin oranges-brain isn't functioning this morning, lol.

Your English friend's version sounds delicious also-I love custard. A thought just came to mind-Your English friend made me think-I wonder how lemon curd would taste?
This is such a versatile dessert! Now you got me thinking! Blueberries, strawberries, angel food and lemon curd or vanilla pudding for 4th of July? Red white and blue-Hmmmm. Might have to try that!

My sister brings one up when she comes up for the fourth. It usually contains the berries that are in season as well as other fruit. I enjoy it and usually eat to much of it.

I make this in a large footed parfeit bowl and it looks so pretty in layers. The only other thing I add is a 1/4C of brandy on the cake before I tear it into pieces! This was a BIG hit at the nursing home - and I'm not sure if it was because it's easy to chew or the touch of brandy!

 (both?)

CapeCMom ~ Though have not tried lemon curd, bet it would taste great in a triffle, but we like anything with lemons in it anyway. For birthday, I LOVE a lemon cake with lemon icing. Also, I really like your idea on making a patriotic triffle, it sounds delish. and would be so pretty!:)

Vegard ~ Know exactly what you mean, I tend to 'over-indulge' when I make one. My excuse (as if needed one-LOL) is they're so light, and taste 'just right' when the weather is warmer!

Carol Ann ~ Oh my....Do you use a particular flavor of brandy (have never put any liquor or wine in anything but my Mother's fruit cake recipe!), but bet it tastes lovely. Your triffle was probably the best cake the folks @ the nursing home had eaten in a looong time...and I'm betting on the "both" option!:)
