Hey, I had a canner given to me! I have my All-American that I really like, but this will be good for having two at a time going, if I need it.

It isn't tall enough to stack but it will hold one layer of quarts or one layer of pints.

The gasket appears to be in good shape, however I'm going to see if I can find a spare. The Vent has a nob on it with an arrow to "open". I guess you can use that to regulate? The gage is old, but I figured it would be easier to just buy a new one.

The way I got it? A buddy of mine knows I garden and do a lot of canning (a lot for one person's needs anyway. lol) He said he was given the canner and didn't know what he would do with it unless I wanted it. Of course, I took him up on it. He has several canners already and one huge one.... bigger than any I've ever seen. It is tall enough to stack quart jars.

I was excited at getting a free canner and just had to share it.

The gauge, old or new, MUST be tested for accuracy before being used and that is an annual routine. A brand new gauge offers no guarantee of being accurate.

The vent is exactly that and is closed off when it is time to start building up pressure. It does not sound like it has a safety valve/plug and that may be an issue.

Thanks. I did call the Extension office this morning. They still test gauges. They now have a tester that does not require putting water in it and bringing it up to pressure. All I have to take them is the lid with the gauge attached. She says it is a fairly quick test. She will be at 4-H camp next week so, I will probably take it in later on. I don't have to use it, but it would be nice having two going sometimes.

Free canning stuff is my favorite kind of canning stuff. I have 3 pressure canners and 3 hot water bath canners now and out of all of them I only bought 1 of the pressure canners.

Good for you! I think it's a good thing to have more than one canners and same with canning items. You never know when something will go unexpectedly wrong, gauge won't work, etc. and there you are @ a standstill. We have 2 of the 5 quart canners with the jiggle thingy instead of pressure gauge. When making a LARGE batch of spaghetti sauce or chili to freeze, have used those instead of a large stock pot. They work just fine for this, also, for cooking large quantities of spaghetti. They're so handy for cooking many things!
