In the current BHM there's an article by Rick Brannan showing how to build an ultra light backpacking stove out of a couple of beverage cans.
Since it involves knives and flames I decided that would be a fun little project for my 11 year old and me to build so we made one with 12oz soft drink cans (smaller than what Rick used).
Rick recommends using a drill for the burner orifices but we went the route of only having access to a knife and used that for drilling holes.
Rick recommends meythl alcohol but we also tested it with denatured alcohol and even rubbing alcohol. The meythl version did work the best but d.a. is considerably cheaper so that's the way I would go.
We had fun, had a chance to talk about life etc. so it was a good time. Next time around, we'll have to cook something on it so we'll REALLY know what it's like.
