My wife has a pair of very nice (Lucchese) boots that are too high for her. Would you need a cobbler to shorten the shafts for her, or can it be done at home with a little skill and a lot of patience.

It can be done at home, however you might want to take it to a shoe repair/cobbler to see if the modification isn't out of line price wise. Once you determine the price from a shop, search the web and do some research into the stitch that should be used to see if your comfortable doing it.

Sinew of the right color and the right stitch as well as some time and you should be able to make the modification.
