Who let the chicks out, oooh, oooh...

We did, finally. We moved them out to the "big house" on Wednesday, my first day of retirement. But the yard section of "Cluckingham Palace" wasn't finished yet. Besides, they needed time to acclimate to the new digs and start to think of them as home.

DD and even WSIL helped me get a lot done both Friday and today. So about 30 minutes ago I let DD catch them all and release them out into the yard. All in all, there are 27 assorted chicks. Ands amazingly enough, they seem to be pretty close to 50/50 even though they were all straight run. And I think they make a pretty attractive collection, although next year I will want some plain white ones too.

Boru the Airedale really wants to taste "pre-nuggets", but that shiny stuff keeps getting in his way. The clucks have already decided he isn't worth getting excited about.

I think the real fun will be trying to get them all back into the coop now.

Wow - that is some chicken palace!

Thanks for sharing - and they should just go back to roost at night by themselves.

VERY VERY NICE! That is a really cool setup you have there. We've got 8 chicks now that are about a week old and we need to start on a home for them. We're starting with a couple old rabbit hutches and working from there. I'm sure it won't be near as nice as yours. Great Job

No_Trespassing you should check out this post (http://www.homesteadingtoday.com/showthread.php?t=255716) on the Homesteading Today poultry forum. There is TONS of good info on housing there.

And this (http://www.homesteadingtoday.com/showthread.php?t=183999) was the plan that started me thinking. I knew that I wanted to harvest about a dozen eggs per day. That meant that I had to have 12-15 hens. So I increased the Lil' Red Coop to 4'x8' and increased the run area to 8'x16'. The pictures of the Lil' Red Coop don't appear clear, but they print out great. It might be a good starting point for your 8 chicks.
