Dear Readers:

About four years ago, we decided to replace our Craftsman Garden Tractor that had a 26 hp Kohler Engine. The engine was still running strong and pulling trailers, etc. However, the deck and other parts were rusting and had been beaten with use. So we replaced in with another Craftsman Yard Tractor with a Briggs & Straten 24 hp Engine. Whole new world. We noticed right off it didn't seem to have the gump the old one did, but excused it because of the slight difference in hp. This year we went to run it and one day it refused to cut. DH, who is very mechanical and handy checked spart plug, push rods and low and behold one rod was gone. He tore it down a bit further and found the push rod down in the oil pan. (Luckily it didn't appear to damage anything as it went down through). DH ordered new gaskets, push rods, spark plug and invited the neighbor, who is an engineer and used to be a tractor mechanic to oversee the replacement of these parts. He also check with Briggs & Straten and they said the timing should be between .004 and .006, so he set it for .005. He couldn't get the darned thing to stay in time. He also discovered that the push rod that was in the botton of the oil pan was an exhaust one (and should have been steel not aluminum, which it was). Of course he notifited B & S, who said sorry about your luck 1 year warranty.

DH decided to replace said engine with a new one. Again went to B & S and was told that they didn't really recommend the 24 hp original engine, instead they recommended a 27 hp one for nearly $1500. So this tells me they knew they had made an inferior engine and were unwilling to accomodate to any extent their customers. We also contacted a highly recommended tractor dealer to do the work and the best gestimate they could give us would be about $500. Therefore, we went out and got a new Craftsman Garden Tractor with of course a Kohler Engine. I'm having difficulty understanding this because we have wood splitters with B & S Engines, etc. Has anyone else had problems with B & S and their customer service. Cause I have to say at this point, I will avoid any B & S engine on anything....

The problem here is, B&S along with Kohler and everyone else, make "several grades" of motors. Get the low grade Briggs, and it won't last long. The lowest grade Kohler isn't much better...

It's all about how the mfg. spec'ed the tractor in the first place... If they cheapoed out on the motor, you will pay later when you buy it...

IMHO the top of the line B&S is every bit as good as the top of the line of Kohler of equil HP if not better, but i don't have much use for the lower lines in any brand...

Last time i purchased a top of the line small gas motor, i picked a B&S, and it's been a GREAT motor.

DM hit the nail on the head with his reply. If your B&S engine has the problems you say contact Briggs directly and they will have one of their customer reps look at it.

Briggs was very accommodating when it came to warranty claims. More so that other brands we handled.

Whatever you decide to buy in a small engine, I would check these guys out:
http://www.smallenginewarehouse.com/

I have bought several from them and been very pleased with price, delivery, and the products. From what I've seen, they have beat the sox off most places I checked on price, and they have almost 22,000 engines in stock!

Like DM said, you get what you pay for, so choose wisely. ;)

Thanks for all the help guys. We're still talking with B & S. Meanwhile, we bought a different tractor as we have quite a bit of land and much to mow. We had to do something and relatively quick. Not much of a choice in the matter, unfortunately. Replacing the engine was cost prohibitive, etc. They really had us by the short hairs and have not been very helpful.

I'm surprised anyone who has been around small gas motors much at all, would believe those big hp claims in the first place!

This lawsuite came about because engine manfactures rate their engine HP at 3200 RPM but engines used on push mowers are limited by OSHA to 2800 RPM to not exceed recommended blade tip speed.

Its a product libality thing.

Dear Members:

An update for you. Finally got the right person at Briggs & Straten. They are sending us new heads for the engine that dumped. We will return the problems ones so they can learn what caused the problem. Seems very reasonable and helpful. At this point I'm very happy with their solution, if they follow through and do what they say they will do. We will repair the old one and give it to our son for his yard, as he is getting married this up and coming year. Unfortunately we had to buy another one for our property. Very expensive. What else can you do when they have you by the short hairs.

The original riding lawn mower (with the B&S engine) was not the bottom line model. It also cost a pretty penny - $2,000. But at least they are getting off their butts and attempting to cooperate and make things right.

Was aware of the law suit. What a mess!!!! Gives new meaning to let the buyer beware, doesn't it?

I'm glad you are getting your mower fixed... Briggs usally is pretty good about warr... And, just because it's not a cheapo mower, it doesn't mean the company that had it built didn't spec a lower end motor in it...

If you want a really good Briggs motor, it better say Vanguard on it!
