Hello, I've been cutting down a bunch of trees lately and offering the wood to friends. Some of the wood has huge knots in it and some of it has huge holes from bug damage... is this wood still good for burning? Excuse my ignorance...

The wood would be fine for burning, Depending on the types of bugs in it you may not want to store it inside though. Knots burn great but can be a bear to split. Keep it covered and only bring in what you are ready to burn to try to limit any bug problems. Ants and termites would be my biggest worries to bring in.

Be careful when storing wood near/inside the house...don't know what kind of spiders you have...I have been killing a lot of black widows in my wood storage..( think I am finally winning that battle, though) forbade kids from getting in wood after dark :P

We've found 2 widows this year, right on our front porch. *~* I hadn't seen one since I was a little kid in Texas. Thankfully they're fairly easy to identify

I stack mine up on pallets all summer. and keep it over by the barn, in the sunshine. It's one more trip, but it's better than actracting mice to the house.

I used to do a lot of firewood, but have since got lazy and shifted over to burning propane to heat my home. Still I recognize that a lot of people burn firewood, or will be now, so I put together a web page on my website all about firewood. It should be a lot of help to you.

Everybody, PLEASE REMEMBER to have WORKING smoke detectors in your homes! And change the batteries at least twice each year!!!! Also please make sure your chimney is done safely! Don't cut corners on the chimney. At little extra cost up front can keep you from paying dearly later! best wishes!
(and I LOVED that link to the website with all the firewood info!!!! We've been heating with wood since about 1980!)

Great point Suzy!
We gave our parents a smoke detector to place in the attic close to their chimney (they already had them in the house). It saved their lives when they had a flue fire. That detector went off but the ones in the house never did.... Dad scrambled up the roof and poured down the sandbags from the back of his pickup and every bag of flour and sugar mom had in storage and smothered the fire. You do what you have to do when you live in the middle of nowhere, just outside of nothing.
He was more diligent about cleaning the flue after that.
We also gave them 2 carbon monoxide detectors - one for the basement and one for the main floor of their home. Their wood stove was two piggy-back 55-gallon steel drums in their basement.

It just needs a year to dry good, but it'll burn.
