I sold a friend a wind generater and I had kept the control box. He called up a solar out fit to get another control box and they said he needed a special one that works with wind generators. The one I kept was just the run of the mill boxes that one would use will panels and it seemed to work just fine with the wind generator. Why would one need a special box for a wind generator or were they just trying to sell him a more exspensive box?

Solar charge controllers will just open the circuit on the solar panels when the batteries reach a full charge (no harm comes to the solar panels).
However with a wind generator, you always want a load on it to keep it from spinning out of control. A controller for a wind generator will divert the load from the batteries to another load (hot watter element, resistor, high amp light, ect...) when the batteries reach full charge. Keeping this load on the wind generator at all times will help keep it from turning to fast in high winds and destroying your blades or internal workings of the generator.
I hope this info helps...
