This summer I've really been enjoying Jello and got to thinking how neat it would be to use fruit juices and make my own.. Here are three recipes.. I don't know that it's any cheaper but it sure could be better tasting! I use 7-UP sometimes when I make mine as part of the liquid needed in the recipe. Also.. sweeten in the manner your family is happiest with.

Recipe #1 Homemade Jello (using fruit juice)

Put 1/3 of a c. of juice in a large glass measuring cup
Add 1 packet of gelatin (Knox Gelatin)
((stir it around until the gelatin is dissolved))

Put into the microwave for 2 minutes and let it come to a boil.
If the juice is too tart (from fresh berries).. add about 1/4 c. sugar or 1/8 tsp of stevia before setting it in the microwave.

Take out of the microwave, add enough cold juice to make 2 c. Stir well.

If you do not have juice from your own garden, you can easily make it by using bottled fruit juice or frozen juices.
Start with 1/3 c. of bottled juice and proceed as above, only adding more bottled juice after heating in the microwave.

Make new flavors by mixing juices.

Try heating 1 c. of cranberry juice with 1 package of gelatin. Add half frozen orange juice concentrate and half water to equal the 2 c. after heating.

Cranberry-Orange,Peach-Mango,Apple-Cranberry.....are all good.
Don't forget to add a dollop of whipped cream!

Recipe #2 Homemade Jello (using fruit juice)

2 (1/4oz) envelopes unflavored gelatin
1/2 cup fruit juice
3 cups hot fruit juice
Optional: sugar, as desired

In a large bowl combine gelatin and cold juice. Allow to sit 10 minutes to allow gelatin to soften.

Add hot juice (and sugar, if desired). Stir until the sugar is completely dissolved and mixture is clear.

Chill until set (1-2 hours). If desired, pour into individual serving dishes before chilling.

Recipe #3 Homemade Jello using KOOLAID powder
"Make your own jello flavors!"

Ingredients
1 envelope knox gelatin (or 1 Tbsp.)
1 cup boiling water
1 cup cold water
3/4 cup sugar (10 packets of sweetener)
1 teaspoon unsweetened Kool-Aid (to taste)

Directions
Put 1 cup water on to boil.
Sprinkle gelatin into 1 cup cold water.
Mix in sugar (or sweetener) and 1 tsp Kool-aid powder.
Stir until thoroughly dissolved.
Add boiling water and stir.
Adjust amount of sugar and Kool-aid to taste.
Chill until firm.

Knox gelatine packets, while convenient, make the gelatin very expensive, comparitively.

I buy mine here http://www.greatlakesgelatin.com/gelatin%20information.htm (http://www.greatlakesgelatin.com/gelatin%20information.htm)

It dissolves a lot easier than Knox too because it's finer.

They have both pig and cow gelatin, and non-human consumption animal grade.

Google the brand and you might find it even less expensive, I saw where Amazon had it with free shipping.

I thought for sure you were talking about using cow hooves when I opened this thread. I remember my grandma using hooves when she made gelatine for meats and things. I think they used bones too.

omg.. no...me don't wanna eat KOWhooves  BUT the thot of juice from ripened fruit and the sparkling 7-UP making a good rich tasting bowl of goodness sure sounds good when the days are soooo hot and unkind.

I'm going to be using Welches Grape Juice YUM!

Thank You very much, MEBrian.. I'll check it out.

Sorry to hijack the thread Grizz.

Yeah, old time European peasant food. Being from peasant stock myself, Mom would at times make "siltza" (not spelled correctly, but that's the sound), from pigs feet boiled for many many hours. She'd strip the feet and keep anything edible, this includes the skin, then add the broth to cover, and cooled it tolet it gel and she loved it. I mostly left it alone. I'd have to be pretty hungry. :D I like pigs feet and stuff like that, it was the bland gelatin that did nothing for me. Then there is head cheese, same technique, different "cut" of meat. Probably all peasant cultures make the same dishes. They couldn't waste anything or they'd starve.

Grizzy - you tickled me with that Kowhooves post! :)
Where you think Knox gets gelatin, anyway? (Actually, pig feet and chicken necks is another yummy source . . . .)

That gross information aside, I used to make "fruit juice jello" jigglers - (half the liquid) & Knox gelatin for little ones with measles or sore throat that wouldn't eat or drink. They'd snarf these down and get a semi-liquid, healthy snack at the same time. The best one was made from some Pina Colada juice from the health food coop. Expensive, but yummy - and when you've got a sick kid that doesn't want to swallow anything, it works.

Pulled an item from my DIY Cookbook that may be of interest.
Gelatin History
http://homecooking.about.com/od/foodhistory/a/gelatinhistory.htm

A FWIW... I've been picking up a few boxes of Knox, from time to time, to go into the pantry stash. It's just another item on the list to add 1 or 2 at a time to the grocery cart. No big hit on the budget, as the supply gradually increases.

Just 2-cents, this morning.
