I'm looking to buy a hand water pump, for a lift of about 20', so just a cistern pump. Anyone can recommend a certain model or caution against others? We're way up north, so I'll have to dismantle the whole thing and lug it 200 yards over into the cabin every fall.

I've seen plans to build one from pvc. Cost for that small of one would only cost about $30. or so. I can find the article if you want. I think it was in Mother Earth News about 5 years ago. I built one for My property and it works great except that it is not a pitcher pump style it is a two handed T handle. It only took about 15 min to assemble and what ever the dry time, then three people to drop the 50' down the well. A short 20" drop could easily be done alone but would be easier from the back of a pick up truck.

Here is a link to an example of such a pump. Maybe you can make better sense out of it than me.

Oh wow, I actually found it online. Last time I tried to use thier web site I was going bonkers trying to find stuff. I have the hard copy from when the Mag was printed.
Here is the link:

I think the hardest part was cutting a new hole in the well cap and figuring hkow deep into the water I wanted to go.
good luck and ask if you have any questions.
John

PS the pictures and parts list are in the image gallery not in the article like they use to be
