I looked at their site and at a Google Maps map of the city. It looks to me like they are trying to expand their city by giving away city lots. Now there isn't a mention of lot size (that I could see), so these may not be exactly "homestead" size. At least not what many of us would think of a homestead.

That said, it does look like an interesting idea, and could give someone a good start.

It's better than nothing and I hear Nebraska has a very low unemployment rate. You can do a lot with just a city lot if you work it right.

Fantastic! Not exactly 40 acres and a mule...but it's a start! Hopefully some other areas will get the idea.

It's in an area of farms (I guess most of NE is!) and about 70 miles from a town I know and love. My husband read all about it -- city lots, they sell it to you for $2,000 but you have 5 years to pay. You have 6 months to start building and for every year you live in the home, they forgive 1/5 of your $2,000. After 5 years, the lot is yours for "free" -- no money down, etc.

I read they were doing this in some towns in, hmmm, SD, ND or WY. I think it's a great idea. NE does have lowish unemployment, lower rules and regulations than a lot of states and gets mighty cold in the winter!

I think it's a GREAT idea for people who need a hand up or a fresh start.
