I have the chance to buy a Fisher Grandpa Bear wood stove just like the one in our old log cabin....in fact it's the same stove....the lady who bought our old cabin wants to sell the stove! I'm "very" familiar with this stove.....my question is: Is $500 a good price for this stove? It'll easily heat 1000-1200 sq ft.....our old log cabin was 750 sq ft and the stove is really tooooo much for it.

Edited to add: I just downloaded the manual for this stove...the manual claims the Grandpa Bear will heat a 1750-2250 sq ft home.

Proud_Poppa,

It sounds all right to me, assuming the stove is in good condition. Does it have wear on the draft controls, or door gasket damage? Door hinges and latch okay? I think those had firebrick in the bottom, if so, be sure it is in good shape.

I don't know the retail price of that stove, or if it is still being made, but it was a quality stove when new, and undoubtedly sold for more than $500. Compared to new prices of any quality stove now, that is reasonable, IMHO.

Long ago, I built a copy of a Papa Bear stove, and it gave us good service for many years, but I wouldn't build another for $500! Twice that would be closer to the price, considering how much work it is, even with my commercial shop. Fisher used heavy material, so just the steel cost is pretty high. I think mine weighed in around 300 lbs., having ,made it a bit thicker in places, and steel plate costs me around 80 cents/pound now, so that is near half of the $500 asking price.

I also built mine. it is more of the mama bear size. No way would i build another for 500 bucks. Those stoves are amazing and I still use mine to heat my whole house.

Fisher stoves are awesome. I've got a Mamma Bear I paid $250 for which I consider a goood deal. I would say the Grandpa Bear is worth $500. I think it all depends on how good of a deal she got on the cabin. There's a Mamma Bear on ebay right now in Ctrl Ohio. http://cgi.ebay.com/FISHER-Wood-Burning-Stove-Burner-Fireplace-/250687748601?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0

I'm designing our house around the fisher. :)

I've got a manual for the grandma and grandpa stoves if anyone needs it. It also has clearances for the other fisher stoves.
