I go fishing and hunting as much as i can to save money there too..well that is alittle about us. i will keep checking this site to find some of the cool idea's yall have...thanks Mike

always tickled to see someone sign in from KY. I would trade you some of your clay for a lot of my sand. Easy to work but manure, compost etc just seem to go through it. We are in Central Ky

Welcome to the forum, Mike. Not from anywhere near Kentucky but from lower Alabama.

Welcome... Get a cup of coffee and enjoy the company. Lots to learn from the wealth of information already shared. Our daughter and her family are at Ft. Campbell and we love visiting down there :D.

Hey Mike! Welcome!
I come here and read often, though post very little.
I'm in KY too!!!
How on earth are we to ever get our grdens out wiht all this rain?
Farmers are really having a hard time too getting crops out.
We seem to only get one or two days without rain at a time.
I was lucky to get our grass cut Saturday.
I mowed for 3 hrs straight!
But, got it done.

I love KY.
My Mom and Dads family are all from Old Eddyville.
Moved to Evansville after WWII for Dad to work at whirlpool.
Stayed in IN until I was 32 or so, where I met my Hubby in KY and have lived here ever sense.
It was very much like coming home to me.
There's so much to read here, good luck finding the time to post too!
:)

Welcome!

Karen, in N/W KY.

Well here's a welcome from Eastern Kentucky, we have lots of sand in our river bottoms and have managed to get our garden planted and fenced in during the in between rain showers and the garden is so far doing great. I think you will enjoy this site, lots of really knowledgeable folks here.
Are you near Kentucky Lake area? I have relatives in Callaway county.

Welcome

I am sort of new here also,
We live in Southern MO, and we have clay and rock, or rock with a little clay.

I spend most of my time reading, trying to learn what I am doing. There are tons of useful info on here. A lot of people have made mistakes, and have been good enough to explain them, which has kept me from making them. It is a great place to hang out.

Hello neighbor and welcome,

I also love to see and hear from a fellow Kentuckian! You folks live lose to LBL? We usually make a trip over there each year. In fact, I wanted to go this past weekend but wasn't able to make it. The Berryhill's were at the 1880's Homeplace at LBL Saturday and I had hoped to get over there and visit with them and pick their brains a little concerning herbs and organics. They are really knowledgeable!

Any way, we live in South Central KY, about 20 minutes from Bowling Green. Absolutely love it here!! The soil is awesome and several years of composting makes it even better. We have a great growing season and even though it has been very rainy this year we have most of our garden planted already, hopefully we'll finish up this week. We are already getting a little broccoli and some onions from the garden and the potatoes, beans, and corn are really growing fast. We have a few tomato plants that have blooms on them and we'll be planting the rest of them soon.

We also do a lot of canning. We hope to grow 75%-80% of what we eat this year from our garden.

Hope you enjoy the site. There are some great folks here with years of experience, a wealth of knowledge, and a willingness to share what they learn with others. Couldn't ask for better neighbors. They even check on you when you're sick as I have personally found out. Hope you find it as enjoyable as I have.

Take care,
Homesteading Dad n KY

after the drought last year the rain looks good to me. I am late with a lot of things in the garden, planted corn and beans today> An old man from Ohio once told me long time ago that the 12th of May is butter bean day, so it got stuck in my brain and, being fairly new to KY (though married to a native) I have loads of Kentucky ways to learn.
we are eating greens and radishes so far and the first strawberries are getting ripe.
I don't know about how farmers are doing as there is not much farming in this area, mostly pasture, and we live practically in the woods in a patch of nothing but steep little hills that seem like a giant swept them here into a pile.
maybe we Ky folks ought to have a get together sometime, what do you say?
