Just thought I would let you all know of a couple of recent posts on my blog (The Survivalist Blog. The posts tell how I moved out to my own small homestead, on two acres with a used travel trailer for under $8,000 dollars.

Hi Crazycow
Congratulations! *Looks like you're on your way. *Read your blogs and wanted to ask if you have any pictures of your property?

Of things to do, the first thing that comes to mind is water resources. *What area of the country are you in. *Sounds like WV or so, is that right? *Can you set up some kind of rainwater collection system? *Since you're on reclaimed mining land, the first think I would ask is whether the soil/ground water is contaminated with mine wastes? *With a good sized shed roof and a poly tank I would think you could collect 100-200 gallons a week.

Since most of the topsoil has been stripped away, is there any chance of growing anything there? *Having your own garden/orchard would go a long way to making you more self-sufficient! *Are there any old piles of topsoil left over in the area that you can truck in? *Better yet, is there any leftover coal for the taking. *I bought a combination coal/woodstove for my cabin, but have never burnt coal because it's not availble here.

Hope to hear from you soon,
Michael

I'm glad to see people doing this. I have heard many people "talk" about doing this, but they wont use the extreme measures of a camping trailer or even a tent, to move onto their property. I admire those willing to do so.
