I already have my cabin plans, and have started gathering things for when I start building. I scored two windows and enough beautiful new tumbled tile for the shower/bath. My neighbor is a contractor who lays tile. He had some really beautiful tumbled tile he had left over from a job...more than enough to tile a bath/shower. He said I could have whatever tile he brought home leftover from jobs if I come get it and store it. Also gave me everything to lay and grout it. He had two windows that someone had givin him leftover from a job. Said I could have them. They were used, but in really great shape. I think they will fit in the upstairs bedrooms nicely. He also said he would keep his eyes open and let me know when he found things leftover from jobs he worked on.
A couple of weeks ago I happened to drive by a hardware store that was going out of business. They were down to their last couple of days. Everything in the store was 90% off of their already discounted clearance prices...Did I get some deals...
Example..beautiful bath tub combo faucet ..Original price 239.00 marked down to 50.00 at 90% off 5.00..
I picked up all kinds of plumbing, and electrical needed for my cabin...outlets.. switches...sink traps...lead in lines...sink elbows...I came out of the hardware store with 7 huge paper bags of stuff...all for 70.00...can't beat a deal like that...

Both deals sound terrific - the great neighbour and the finds at the hardware store going out of business! Congrats.

Hums,

I'm so excited to hear of your plans fer a new cabin! Those were some great deals you scored at the hardware closeout. Recycled/used stuff is great too and can save you lots of money. I got a coupla small windows for cheap from someone on craigslist. I found a complete deck disassembled on a curbside that I plan to make a porch or deck with. Keep yer eyes and ears open fer recycled/used stuff. Craigslist and Freecycle.com are good places to look. Of course having your neighbor contractor lettin' you have stuff is a deal that cant be beat.
I look forward to yer progress.

It's too bad that the only way we can win a great deal is for someone else to lose something. At least a real "home" will be built with those materials from the store and they aren't going to a landfill or on a pallet destined for over-seas somewhere.

It's awesome that your neighbor is letting you "store" his over-stock inside the walls, and on the walls, of your new place! Getting to use new or like-new materials in your cabin will help keep the construction labor down too because you won't have to work so hard to try and make do with what you have or make something fit.

Good for you... there will be pics eventually, right???
