It's been about a year since the last rant, and I'd like to remind everyone about the importance of having a weather radio when Spring comes rushing in with its high winds. If you aren't familiar with them, modern weather radios are able to silently monitor your local transmitter and will only speak up when an alert has been issued for your county.

You want to get one that advertises S.A.M.E. technology. I don't recall (or care) what the accronym stands for, but it means you can enter a code for yor county. The transmitters, frequencies and county codes can be found at:
http://www.weather.gov/nwr/indexnw.htm

We have two of them - one that sits on a table in the bedroom and a portable that goes in the car with me or my wife, if one of us has to travel during inclement weather. We also have small two-way radios (Family band? walkie-talkies) so my wife can keep track of me when I'm out in one of the far flung corners of the property. These also have weather radio/SAME capabilities.

Last night we had a front move through that threw out all kinds of tornados. We were lucky. Some of our neighboring towns and counties were not so lucky. Massive damage in Jackson, a number of semi's tossed around on I-40. A natural gas line pumping station got trashed by a tornado and exploded - the fire could be seen for 80 miles. We personally suffered little damage, our thoughts are with the folks that lost lives and property last night.

The radios can be purchased on the internet. It's a small investment for your safety.

Regards,
Pat

We have a NOAA tower on top of Spencer Mountain (more like a hill, only about 1300 ft above sea level), which is about 4 or 5 miles from us...my two-way radio picks it up better than any of the people I try to chat with on there ;D

Good point and one I hadn't really thought about! I had no idea they had so many features now.

I grew up with a scanner in the living room - my dad was volunteer fire chief. We always knew what was going on! He still has it but at least the volume is turned down now.

Wouldn't want to be without my scanner! It can really be a lifesaver during those overnight storms. Plus it lets me know what's going on in our community (crime, fire, a neighbor in need, etc.).

Yes, I have considered getting a scanner...

But what about these shortwave and weather systems? I have no idea what I am looking for?

WOuld like short wave, the weather alert. I like the hand crank feature...

Does the weather alerts and is crank system?

What about this for a scanner? Would it work for the weather alerts also? I am not sure what I am looking at...

This is the hand held radio we use:

http://www.amazon.com/Oregon-Scientific-WR8000-Hazard-Radio/dp/B00005N5XL

This is the full time stationary radio we use:

http://radioproshop.com/midland/74-109.htm

We have used them for many years and I think newer models have replaced them.

They were worth EVERY penny a few nights ago.

Good thread here. A weather radio is a very valuable tool. I have a Midland that I like as well as a portable scanner (Trunk Trakker) from Radio Shack.

My Midland is here...

Radio Shack sells a CB that does weather band. This same radio has a weather alert built in. You do not have to be listening to the CB or NOAH all the time either just set the alert. I have one in my big truck and it works great. This would kill two birds with one stone. communications and weather in one.

I'll have to check into that. I need a CB...
