Just wondered if any of you have dubbed your homesteads with a moniker?

I'm thinking of calling our farmstead "Teapot Acres" - kinda friendly sounding. Will use it for anything farm related & such.

Ours is called Blackwater Farms, because it's the head of Blackwater Creek, but we just call it 'the dump' for short.

Everything deserves a second chance.
We used this name because all of our animals were rescued or were hand-me-downs. Only one baby kitty in the last few years, but he was tossed out with an old couch someone threw in the trees near our house, you could hear him yelling clear down the street.

Sheltering Oaks. I think every place ends up with a personality and the name follows. I think the neighbors probably call it, "Over planted" or "What are they doing now?"

When we first moved here, called our place Cedar Hill because of all the cedars in the front yard. Almost all of them are gone now, for one reason or the other.

A few years back named our place Camp _________ (the name of our road) because we have the equivalent of a camp site setup in the backyard.

However, most of the time we call it HOME. :)

Wish we could be as creative as some folks with the names they've chosen for their little pieces of heaven right here on earth. Perhaps one day one of us will be as creative as you guys and gals. Or, I'll just call ours Kutzu Heaven. :neo:

I had dubbed ours " The Asylum " for the first few years, Lynn didn't like it, and we then came up with " Slice of Heaven Homestead " and as work progresses, it sure is fitting.

We have an old one-room schoolhouse on our property - wish it had been in better shape to restore it but the previous owners raised pigs in it. I researched all the one-room schoolhouses in the county and some of them had such interesting names & photos. Then I recognized the neighbor's yard where the school used to be and discovered this school's name - Springport. Not sure why they named it that, there is no spring or port??
Every few years though some old-timer who went to school there will stop by and ask to take a few photos and reminisce. So, long story short we named our place Springport Farm.

Welcome Freegal!

Thanks for sharing the history of the name of your homestead. FWIW, I like it when people can carry on the heritage of their homestead in one form or another. You're fortunate to have a reminder of that on your place.

Sounds like a pix of the school house would make for a great business card, even if you don't have a business there. Having a few cards made up comes in handy when someone needs your contact info for some reason. As in leaving your name at a flea market to let you know when they have xyz you've been wanting.

Again, welcome. Please continue to share your homesteading adventures with us.

We have an old one-room schoolhouse on our property

That is so neat! Great choice for a name and to keep the history alive.
Welcome to the forums - hope to hear more from you.

My house, the original part of it was also a school - but you'd never know it. It was moved here sometime in the 1950s.

A local homestead is called "Camp Lottanoise." Say it out loud.

And my favorite name for a home was, I think, Candace Bergen, who called her place, "Casa Costa Mucho."

Our 3 acres is called Falling Leaves Farm because of the 100 or so oaks that are constantly raining leaves down on us. We stayed in Hubbys shop- an all metal building- while building the house and the falling leaves sounded like rain at night........pigzzilla

08-26-2010, 04:17 AM
Our two acres is "Woodchuck Acres" 'cause we spent the first few years here battling monster, bully woodchucks. Ever see a woodchuck on its hind legs eating the leaves off of a cherry tree? Those trees still don't bear fruit! grrrr!
Now everything is fenced and the haveaheart traps are pulled out when needed but the name stuck. Hubby even uses it as the production name when he does a video.

Our place is named LOWES LAZY ACRES.
Almost everything we purchase to fix up the place, or I have a "great new idea" (yah....right lol) project , ends up sitting in the corner of the shed, until I have "time" to "get2it".We also have our Brand licensed under this title. It was supposed to be the Rockin Lowe's, now over the years it is the 2 Lazy Lowe's (lol) we will be rockin in a few more years....in a rockin chair (ha ha). Hopefully our boy will carry on for us, but he wants to be a large animal farm vet. and that will take him away for a few years for school. If the aches and pains don't get us to bad,and we can carry on the farmin', then we will still be the Rockin Lazy Lowe Acres.

And as you all know, when you have a farm and are trying to be self sufficent.... there "ain't nothin lazy" on the acres.

I have often thought I would like to name my place but just can't think of anything that fits our less than 2 acres. The most important thing I call it is "paid for". I would love to buy a bigger place but at our age we don't want to go into debt so guess we will stay here.

Faye, it doesn't matter if you live on a postage stamp!!!!

Heck our place is only a bit larger than yours -- 3 acres -- but it IS our homestead. Plan to stay here the rest of my life. Like you said about yours, it is paid for. And, to me even more important than that it's HOME.

That said :) go ahead and name your place. How about these to get you started brainstorming.

Our 20 acres is currently called "White Birch Acres" based on the number of birches that on on the property and border the meadow where our cabin sits.

Not yet. Maybe in six months. Besides, it takes time for me to hear the name of a place or an animal. It took me almost six months once to hear the name of my cat. But when I called her by name she ran and jumped in my lap with a look like, "It's about time!" So once I get my place I'll take my time, walk the land, pray about it, and listen. And when it comes I'll post it. :)

Moonshine Acres... It stems from how our little place came to be. The guys that helped us build the cabin did so after work it was late Fall and Winter so much of it was built by the light of the moon. My father dubbed it the moonshiners cabin and after awhile it sorta stuck. Moonshine Cabin is located on the banks of Moonshine Pond right square in the middle of Moonshine Acres...

Our place is called Bountiful Ranch. I have a business of soap plus we sell angus beef, hay and blueberries. Someone mentioned above that they had a little farm, well let me tell you I think I did more homesteading on the 3 acres we owned before buying this 280 acres. I love the names that came to you folks!

I am still working on the name for my property.

Names that are sort of being toyed with:

Birchstead (although a lot of the birch came down in the ice storm of 2008, many still remain, in the more deeply wooded regions)

Rivendell Farmstead (Okay, a little Lord of the Rings going on here...)

The Full Deck Farmstead (to reflect the fact this is 52 acres of property)

Hey guys new to this site, and this is my frist post. Isaw this topic and figured that it was a good place to start. Our homestead is called Whiskey Run. Here in Kentucky we even get one better then just naming it ourselves. You can actually register your name with the state and then no one else is allowed to use it. I thought that was pretty cool.

'Catnip Cottage'.

When my wife and I moved here some 16 years ago we brought our 3 kittens with us. She planted catnip in the garden and I had a wooden sign with the name made up for her as a birthday gift.

16 years later and we still have 3 cats - 2 were the original kittens we brought with us.

The catnip? Despite numerous replantings, it continues to wither and die.

The family ranch never really had a name, but we bought a little piece of summer pasture that we always called the Homestead because it was actually a homestead claim from the late 1800s.

Although we have houses built on the main ranch, my father wanted a cabin on the homestead from the moment he bought it, but other things always came first.
He hit his 70th birthday, and decided he wasn't getting any younger so he and I and my 90 year old uncle, (until he passed away) worked to build a cabin.
We cut the timber on the property, skidded the logs using our draft horses, cut lumber in our small tractor powered sawmill, and hand fit the logs in place. It has taken us 5 years so far as the place is located at 6500 feet in elevation so we can only get in there for about 3 months a year, plus as we are using traditional methods, it takes a while.

The cabin did get a name. It may not be a homestead in the classical sense anymore, but it is now and forevermore will be, "Pappy's Dream" :D
