I sure am ready for Spring. *We have gotten so much snow this winter, and now this week it has finally started to melt. *And our place is at the bottom of a hill so all the water is coming down the lane into the front yard on its way to the marsh behind us. *But even with the muddy mess I still am happy to see patches of ground here and there. *I know it is getting closer because I have heard my first Sandhill cranes of the season.
We have a few sheep and 2 horses. *Dogs and cats and geese and turkeys. *I love the animals and am looking to get a couple of goats (milk). *
We had 2 old apple trees, but this last year we started adding more, mostly heirloom apple trees and pear trees. *I also enlarged my raspberry patch. *Usually I have a small garden, but with the way the economy is going, I plan on haveing a huge garden this year. *Anyone else worried about a recession?!
Enough for now. *

Morning Grace, sounds like the spirit of spring is in your soul. Glad you're seeing green! It has been at moderate winter here in the Gulf Islands

What is happening in the U.S. is having a major trickle down affect on us here. Now that fuel has reached it's "peak".....food will be the next. I like you can at least put food "by"...and do so mostly by canning or dehydrating! We experience far too many power outs here, to rely on the freezer. Dehydrated canned meats and fish aren't as great as frozen, but beggars can't be choosers...if situations are dire.

Do you have lots of wild berries in your area that you can preserve?

We have an abundance of Himalayan Blackberries, wild! Apparently they have the highest fibre content of all fruits & veggies. One thing that I do freeze & take my chances is oysters, clams & crab.

Hope you can get your hands in the terra firma, soon!

Welcome Grace!

Change is in the air here too, the days are reaching into the 50s but the nights are still in the 30s and everything is covered in muck!

As for the recession just do your best to plan ahead now and roll with the punches. At least most here will be more prepared than most should things get really bad.

More than ready for Spring, and I'm a winter person!
All my plans cannot come to fruition until the roads remain open to my remote property. Can't even have the cabin kit delivered!
There are more tower sections, PV panels, a wind genny, batteries & other paraphenalia ready to be transported out. Heck, last Saturday I went to Cheyenne & bought a wood stove! Its sitting in the kitchen here now, just collecting cat hair. (I had to assemble it just so I could admire it & check for damages.) Ordering more steel traps tomorrow.
Personally I hope the current global economic situation IS the beginning of the end! But I'm a romantic who has read far too much escapist literature & I'm certain to get some flak for my views.
Darn, I'll miss coffee & tobacco!

Tobakee I won't miss because I'm a non-smoker but coffee , coffee can't disapear , I mean it's the life blood of my body , it's necter of the heavens , it's what keeps me from crashing in the morning while driving to work. Please don't say that coffee will be gone.

I was listening to NPR yesterday about the economics around the globe, & I'm confused a bit.
I'd always believed that economics were a fluid dynamic in a closed system, when one area prospers another falters & vice versa, or like a teeter-totter; but apparently this thing thats occuring now has the whole world in a slump. How can this happen, or is my worldview of economics flawed?

Trust there will be NOTHING romantic about it.

Hi all, Thanks for the nice welcome. Sure glad I subscribe to BWH and that I found this forum. Nice to be around like minded people. This economy is really looking bad. But like Lost & Wyomn said, hopefully some of us will be better prepared than others. Wyomn I envy you being way back in away from everyone. Hopefully your road will open up soon so you can get your stuff home & set up.
Spring is just a few days away! Days are looking brighter.

While its true that emergencies/disasters often bring out the worst in mankind, its also true that agitation makes the cream float to the top.
By 'romantic' I mean that our values may improve after an earth shaking event. AND each day would bring its new adventures to just remaining alive.
I would miss you all, without the internet; but imagine your home lives without the artificial crutch of our techno society.
Surviving families would actually TALK, play games, and work in harness to accomplish mutually beneficial goals.
Isn't that romantic?

Tried to go fishing today, lake still frozen AND covered by many feet of snow. After the past warm week I'd hoped to wet a line. Did get some pics of deer, antelope & elk!

Grace, this is a fantastic forum. Welcome aboard.
The remote site has advantages & disadvantages obviously. I love it but its truly remote. 70mi from a real town, 28mi off pavement, & 2mi beyond the utility grid. Nearest neighbor is 2mi distant, next full time resident is about 12mi, so I have to rely on me. Every phase of planning has to take isolation in mind. Many people only make it a winter or two here before relocating, I can't afford to do that. I've sunk almost all of my worldly value into this place & getting too old to start over. I must succeed!

Living in Medicine Bow until I can get the cabin built. Wife & I purchased a nice home here, but with future economics I really want the Ranch up & operational asap.
Its a backwater for sure, but still too urban for me. With 30/287 & 487 meeting here, it would'nt be practical in a SHTF world.
Delivered concrete to Baggs from Rawlins, working indoors now in Laramie. lol Sometimes the bad things turn out well!
I used to hang with the Baggs Post-mistress, at some classes we took in Rawlins.
