Check this out i been playing with it for a month pretty nice... really easy to install you can even test it with the live option before install to see how compatible your hardware is.. best of all its free :) check out youtube vids of it on customization..

Yes, I've used Ubuntu for a few years. It has a good user community and documentation online.

I have a CD with Memphis on it for borrowed/strange computers, set the computer to boot from CD and I have a machine that is 'normal' to me. Data goes to a thumb drive or portable hard drive.

Reset the boot and the machine is returned to whatever it was.

Mint 9, an "improved and finished _buntu" is excellent for Linux newbies or geeks. There's a version and desktop choice for almost everyone and their hardware available for free here:
