In just a short while, I will be (hopefully) leaving for vo-tech school. The school is in a rural area, in a town of about 4,000 people. Is there any sane (no large loans, or large chunks of money) way to homestead while in school?

Check out internships - local farmers here use interns for help. Renting someplace - lot's of rural areas have rentals where you could homestead. Or farm sitting - giving you some income too.
Also remember that homesteading doesn't mean you need to have acres of land in the country - you can start small with pots of plants on a door step or even indoors!
Good luck!

Thank-you,
I haven't thought about internships. Might be a good idea. I was thinking about just a few acres out in the boonies. Can't stand the city.

A friend of mine in college (late '70's) traded farm work for room and board. Of course, that meant no late night parties, no girls staying over, and no loud music. But he also saved a ton of money, and was amazed at the end of the first semester when he received a check from the farmer because he felt he was getting more than room and board was worth.

PA- Man, that would be a nice deal. Wonder if anyone would do that today. Will check into it.

That's what some internships are now a days. And you bet farmers would do it today! THey often have extra buildings for boarders. I have friends that converted an old milking parlor and a silo into two separate apartments for interns. THey even had interns do much of the construction and allowed them to have their own projects on site. This was an organic lettuce farm.
