Is anyone using one of the large (1500 gallons and up) poly tanks for well (potable) water? Have you noticed any "plastic" taste in your water?

I'd like to add a question to the use of these types of tanks. We are considering one for our place so we can fill it from the well (a long way from the house and downhill by about 100-130 feet) so the well pump isn't working hard and burning electricity all the time. We would use the tank in concert with an on demand pump up at the house so serve our immediate needs.

The question is, how do you maintain potability with the water in the tank? Doesn't it grow stuff etc.?

Thanks for letting me tag along...

Welcome Grant,

Although, I don't use a tank like your thinking of for potable water. I do use one as a holding tank for water for the garden. If the tank is not opaque it will "grow stuff". Sun light seems to do amazing things to water. As for the taste we've used ours for about 3 years now and haven't noticed any smell or anything. Also, sometimes when we have to order water the water truck has a 1300 gallon poly water tank and we haven't noticed anything there either.

Just my thoughts

I have 2 tanks, one is a 10,000 gallon fibreglass tank, that was recyled from a winery...the other is a 3500 gallon plastic (poly) tank. Collect only roof water, have for 23 years. Notice no difference when switching from tank to tank. It was either this system or dig a new well in a not to productive area. Have a well, but it diminished to 1/16 gallon a minute, when the property behind me was deforested.

All downspouts empty into an old recycled freezer (motor removed so no freon leakage) and with a sump pump is pumped to holding tanks.

sunlight plus water equals algae - eliminate light, problem solved - tank in building, tank underground, or, tank simply painted -
