View Full Version : Got a might breezy here last night

Last night a front came marching through, accompanied by sudden, strong winds. The radar showed it as a very narrow band of clouds. I got the impression from the TV weatherman that the winds were running ahead of the front, but they lasted for quite a while afterwards. The temperature dropped 10 degrees in an hour, so there must have been quite a bit of energy rolling along with the front. We came through okay, but did suffer some damage. A tree in front of the house snapped, and the greenhouse exploded. There are greenhouse panels scattered around the yard and the frame is bent in a few places. It can be repaired, but the “new” has definitely been worn off.

The tree is kind of a shame - we were going to cut it down anyway, but there will be less useable lumber now. Any suggestions how to go at cutting this devil down without it snapping in my face?

Pat

How horrible! I know the feeling when the wind destroys something - it had to be really bad to get a greenhouse like that!
Not sure about the tree - be careful though!

Don't feel left out Pat. My yard is full of shingles. :-[ Guess I will be doing some roof repair when it warms up a little. Our power went out about 6:30 pm and did not come back on until around 1 am.
As far as cutting the tree? I think I would try cutting the very end on the right of the picture that you can get a chainsaw on. Cut throw it VERY slowly from the left side to the right. The idea is to gradually let the limb or trunk gradually open up and not pinch the chain bar.
Let me know if you need some help Pat. I have a Stihl O-66 and a Stihl MS-192 I use for cutting firewood. I have to cut sprung limbs like that all the time and have had my share of close calls. Just take it slow and be careful. Have Karen of someone watching also as a second set of eyes to warn you if something shifts and you fail to see it.

...yard is full of shingles...
....have a Stihl O-66 and a Stihl MS-192...
Sorry to hear that. Think Metal when you build the new place.
I got a brute of a Husky for felling trees, but I'm a thinkin this is a job needing a little finness and a light saw to jump out of the way. Got an old 14" poulan to tickle this split with. Will use the husky to lop off the big end and relieve some weight. Point taken about pinching the bar.

Pat

I live along the Rocky Mountain Front where winds have topped 90 mph gusts during a howl. Farther north, they can top 110 mph. Wind is a constant contender here.
Love the greenhouse, wish I could have one like it, but there is no way one like that would survive a season here.

My goodness, Mtnwildflower. That would make me crazy. I hibernate on really windy, gusty days and feel really out of sorts. What does "Rocky Mountain Front" mean...which side is that?"
I can't remember where I heard it or if it's even true: that there's a place in Scotland where the wind blows so awfully that people have gotten away with murder using temporary insanity due to wind as a defense.

I feel for ya Pat, I really do. I was stationed at McConnell AFB in Wichita KS the year the twister hit the base. Demolished our street! They bulldozed everything, nothing could be saved. FEMA was great that year!
Here & now:
Roads closed due to the wind. 30-45mph average, 65mph gusts. Blinding snow.
Been stuck in the house for two days.
Check weatherbug for zip code 82329.

Sunny and a high in the 60s here today...I almost feel guilty for the spring-like conditions we're having, especially since all the storms and such that folks in the Midwest / Rockies have been through. *:(
Finally got up the nerve to survey the forest for damage and all I can say is what a mess. *See the other post on the storms for 2/5/08. :-[

Hey there. Sorry to hear about your greenhouse and tree.
WRTN: We had the same winds here last night with a few more loose shingles, but nothing like a yard full. :(
Had to do more shingle repairs today but caught things before the damage was too bad. Still haven't decided what I am going to do with all of the downed trees.
