We stopped at a yard sale yesterday where I found a huge box of the half gallon old blue Ball jars with the old fashioned lids for $5. I was thrilled. I washed them up, and am going to fill them with wheat or flour then store them in the dining room because they are pretty. I think I will just toss the lids in drawer to save, and use those plastic lids on top of them. There must be thirty jars. A wonderful buy.

you and my wife have a similar concept for the display of jars filled with wonderful food stuffs. there is a photo of Kristine's Jar rack which has been a focal point in her kitchen, a place of creativity and amazement for us. Here is the blog link, it was her Thanksgiving post last year: http://patentingmyre-invention.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html

I have a shelf as a room divider that looks alot like the one at Kent's house. I store different types of pasta, dried beans and grains. Mine is near a window so it gets a little light on it at times and it does look like art (eye of the beholder :)) - but it is another thing to dust. ;)
It's sure a conversation starter, people want to know if I use all of that "stuff" or if it's just a decoration... a great way to talk about being prepared!

Good for you Mom2-7, what a find!

What a wonderful find! Congratulations.

I was at a "country store" flea market yesterday. Plain (various brands) clear 1/2 gallon jars were $4 EACH! That's more than the price of new ones WITH lids and rings.

I would have bought all he had if they had a decent price on them. Didn't bother to ask about the smaller jars as I knew WalMart would beat the price and I'd get the rings & lids, too.

Guess people who don't research prices make ideal customers for second hand sellers like this one. He wanted $5 for a plain oil lamp chimney. I find them for $1 or 2 each at several places.

Again, congratulations on your find! I'm :D with envy! :)

My brother built me a similar shelving unit, for my jars, only he enclosed it in the wall, making use of the space between the two walls, with sliding doors. Works great and no dusting of the jars. LOL :D

I received about 10 blue canning jars with the one piece lids that say Ball on them from freecycle. I called Ball to see if I can buy lids or if I could reuse the lids. Ball stated the USDA does not recommend canning anymore because of health reasons. But stated they were perfectly useable for dry goods. Now I have all quarts and the Mrs. thought maybe we could use them for our dried beans. Does anyone know if these are safe for anything other than dried goods? Thanks

They are safe to can in as long as you use the modern two piece lid and ring.

I wouldn't waste them as "canning" jars. They are just too pretty. I put rice, beans, flour, sugar, and things like that in them. You can line them up on a shelf, and they are just pretty. I've got enough of the regular canning jars to can. I just like the old blue and green ones because they are pretty.
