View Full Version : WOW - the price of coffee
I knew it was going to happen but I just looked at coffee at my favorite on-line place to buy green beans. In the last 5 weeks the price of their beans has gone up about 12% and I fear it is only going to get worse before it gets better. Better stock up now before we are forced to make coffee out of acorns and chicory.
If anyone else that buys green beans knows of any place on line that is having a sale or special please share.
Thanks

I've never been able to afford the green beans to start with! I know it's not for long term storage but I can buy a 3lb can of regular coffee for $5......and they last over a year.
what brand of coffee can you get a 3lb can for $5.00 - the cheapest I have seen regular coffee for around here in the stores and that is only when it is on sale is for $3.99/lb for Community Coffe and it's not very good coffee.

If you have an Aldi's, there regular price is $4.99 for a can of their brand, Beaumont...... but I was wrong on the size... it's 2lb 2.5oz. Also, if you have Menards Hardware, they often have sales for coffee. What's in the cupboard at the moment is Menard's sale Chase and Sanborn 2lbs 1oz. (So, guess I was thinking the 2lb cans were 3 lbs, lol, sorry). I always get my coffee in those size cans. 2lb to 2.5lbs I guess. Often Walmart or the local grocery will have either Folgers or Maxwell house on sale for $5 a can, it's rare I can't find one or the other of those 2 brands at one or the other of those 2 stores, if that even makes sense lol. Walgreens often has coffee sales as well.....
We don't have either of those stores here in Texas and I tried Chase and Sanborn about 3 years ago - couldn't handle it. I have few vices but good coffee is one of them. I don't eat candy; don't eat sweets except maybe at a Holiday meal; have given up booze and soft drinks - 2-3 cups of coffee in the morning and then lots of water the rest of the day but I want those cups of coffee to be WONDERFUL

Don't blame ya. I, am a woman of way too many vices, lol. But, I think my coffee sensing mechanism is broke, as all coffee from all cans taste like coffee to me. The only coffee I don't like and won't drink is most coffee from fast food places, and starbucks. Although Burger King just got Seattle's Best which I believe is made by Starbucks, and that coffee IS good. I'm just not a picky coffee drinker, I guess, if it's got caffiene, I'm in, lol.

I buy Starbucks ground at Wal-Mart and then brew it myself. I also don't drink much coffee, but when I do, I want the GOOD stuff. Folger's and Maxwell House and most of the cheaper brands has a bitter aftertaste! The Starbucks doesn't. After drinking one of those cheaper brands, I have to drink 2 or 3 glasses of water just to get the taste out of my mouth! YUCK.
Coffee can keep pretty long-term if you buy it in the sealed bags and then put those in a plastic bucket with a tight fitting lid and an oxygen absorber thrown in. The bags are already vacuum sealed, the OA in the bucket is just extra insurance if you want it.

I get Folgers in the 2 lb, 0.5 oz (thats what the label says) for under $7.00. And that can almost last a month. Made the mistake of buying a 3lb can of Nabob a few months ago for $4.00 a can. There were people buying 10 at a time at that price. I don't know if it was a nasty batch, but it was horrible.
What really blew my mind a couple of days ago was, I was in a convenience store and had a hankering for a chocolate bar. It's literally been years and I wanted an Oh Henry, just the regular small 2 oz bar, not one of those king sized ones. The girl rang it up and said $1.69!!!!! I was so surprized that I blurted out, $1.69 for a chocolate bar?? The owner's wife was standing there and heard me and said, "Chocolate doesn't grow on trees, ya know!" (I thought it did) The people that own that store are nice people, but I don't think I will be going back, I've been watching and most places have chocolate bars for $1.19.

A lot of the bigger stores, Prarie, like the box stores, and larger groceries, regularly have chocolate bars for $.50.
I wonder how much money i've saved in my lifetime? I've never bought coffee even one time to this day. I bet i haven't had 10 cups of coffee in my life, and even less tea. lol

I'm with you,DM,except I've never tasted coffee before.I don't like the way it smells and the mess everyone makes when they pour it in their cups, mix all the additives to it, and spill it on the floor and everything else that it can be spilled onto.
That being said, even though I don't drink it,it does seem like it costs an awful lot of money for what you get. It's not only coffee,it's everything that isn't a neccesity. If you think it's worth it,buy it.
Look at soft drinks.$1.49 for a 20oz.bottle of sweetened, flavored water.I would have to be on death's doorstep before I paid $1 for a bottle of water that most likely came from some municipal water supply.Portraying bottled water as healthier or tastier is a crock.
Like I said,I've never tasted coffee, but I've paid attention to how much it costs.Coffee to go in these convenience stores is $.79 and up for a very small cup.A person could drink up a decent retirement buying coffee over a lifetime.Just my observation.

And how did drinking coffee become a vice? :yes4: I bet I've saved thousands of dollars over the course of my lifetime not being able to drink alcohol, but if having a glass of wine a day makes you happy -- brew away!
I'm not a coffee drinker, but drink tea, three perfect cups a day, which means a 200 count box of my brand lasts me over 3 months. Agree it doesn't seem very frugal to buy all your coffee at Starbucks/7-11, but I say people should spend their dollars they way they want to and I should spend mine the way I want to.

I am addicted to the drugs coffee and tobacco. If I could easily quit, it would be the tobacco. I like my morning pot of coffee on the patio in the morning sun. When I entered the workforce, I like to have coffee all morning, not just a 10 o'clock, and to save time I started drinking it black. My refill would cost the boss about 25 seconds as opposed to a minute and a half, so he didn't mine me having the cup on the workbench. I've drank it black ever since, and only in the am. If I don't, I get nasty withdrawals in the pm that only coffee or Anacin (ASA + caffeine) can alleviate, and coffee in the pm for me means I can't sleep.
And why is everyone being nasty to each other about drinking coffee? Some people like it, some don't. Big woo!

I was merely stating that I don't think coffee would be a good buy for me.Whatever a person wants to drink, eat, smoke, snort up their nose,or shoot in their arm is no business of mine.If they like it and are willing to pay for it,have at it.

I used to drink tea (wasn't a coffee drinker at all) but my tummy couldn't handle it during my 3rd pregnancy (and the world wasn't ready for me to be caffeine-free yet ;) ) so I switched to coffee. It's probably not healthy for me between the sugar and the creamer but I DO enjoy my two daily cups in the morning.
That said, I can thoroughly enjoy the more expensive varieties but opt for Aldi's brand as well. Last check about a week ago still had their brand at 4.99 for that 2+lb can. I did stock up and snagged 5 cans which will last me long past winter (I'm the only coffee drinker in the house).

I'm loving the coffee talk!
I'm a coffee fan. I guess I'm going to have to get some green beans. I've heard they're relatively easy to roast. I've got some freeze dried coffee in my preps, but to me there's no comparison to fresh brewed.
Something I need to get is a hand cranked coffee grinder. A few years ago we had a big windstorm (tail end of hurricane Ike) and we didn't have power for almost 2 weeks. I got my press pot out to make some coffee since it didn't need electricity and that's when I realized I didn't have a way to grind my beans. Grrrrrr. Needless to say, I had to pull a jar of Taster's Choice out of the preps.
Does anyone have and suggestions for a non-electric coffee mill?

I have seen them at antique stores. The kind with the small hopper on top, a crank, and a pull out drawer where the ground coffee goes. I was at a friend's place last year, and he made himself a coffee. He pulled out one of these grinders, boiled some water, ground the coffee and used a french press to brew his coffee. He's not even a homesteader type of person, but he says that it made the best coffee.

For YEARS I drank coffee from before sun-up to bedtime. LOVED it!. About 6 months ago I was ready to go see a cardiologist over shortness of breath and decreased endurance. As I lay in bed one night with a pulse of over 100 with no exertion greater than counting my pulse. I vowed I would not drink coffee in the morning knowing it would exacerbate my elevated heart rate. So I didn't....guess what? ALL my symptoms left. I have drunk no more caffeine over a cup or two of hot tea in the morning since. ( well, I did drink a Coke and had palpitations once). I have honestly grieved the loss of my friend coffee. I gave it up non-consentually.

my blood pressure was so low and the Doc said coffee would be the simplest way to deal with it.
I am wondering what the folks who do not drink coffee, tea, beer and wine nor sodas do drink? Don't tell me you have hot water for breakfast. Or is Postum still around? One of life's pleasures is a good cup of coffee in the morning, (or two or three). I am in luck, the salvage store still has good coffee, but the price has gone way up too, 50 cents in the last month. I got Lavazza for 1.75 and yesterday it was 2.25.
Coffee has really gone up here also. The 2 lb 2.5 oz container of folgers is over $6 and that is at the dollar store. I don't like folgers or maxwell house but I like whole bean eight o'clock. I used to order gevalia but it was just to expensive. I used to drink mine with evaporated milk(that's what a lot of people around here used to use) but have started putting whole milk in it. I refuse to use coffee creamer and don't like it black. I really like half and half but it has that gum stuff added to it and I don't like that either. I just need a cow for some fresh cream. ETA: I wanted a manual coffee grinder and looked in the Lehman's catalog. They have them but they are expensive. I think my kids paid like $75 for mine. They are always going to buy me a Christmas gift so I ask them to go together and get something like that which would be a lot for one of them. I love using that thing.

COFFEE did some one say COFFEE, lol. Going to put a little back ya can bet on that. At the local IGA it was high at $8.99 a can for their brand, now it's $10.99, CRAP OLA! it has shot up all over even the large store sale used to be at $6.99 for folgers now $8.99 when it is on sale. All these prices are on the 2 lb 2.5 oz cans. Could not afford the beans before now that's not an option at all. The higher end of the coffee chain some brands are up to the $12.00 mark. It's the one addicted thing i do not want to get off of. Smokes yes coffee naw, i like it. A world with out coffee, o my gawd! nope it would be mass carnage all over lol. I will store the small vac packs as i call them, i think they would last much longer than the can,s. I have opened a 1 and a half year old can and it, looked the same but when brewed it had a flat kinda straw taste. But i could get used to that if it was all that i could get. I will quit smoking. I will quit Pepsi, and I will never again, grace the drive thru of a Starbucks (I ONLY go, when I am on a road trip to see my boy. Sometimes 2 x a month but I will have 3-4 coffee's from there!! Bre-vay with extra whip!!). I am getting a trainer, and I am toning up, eating right (for my age) and living a healthier life style.
I WILL NOT give up my morning coffee.
If there is a 'organic' or better choice, I will be more than happy to spend the extra cash (which I will have as I will save 5.00 every other day by not smoking).
But that is a vice, I just don't want to let go of.

Anyone ever taste chicoree (sp?) coffee ? I can remember during the 2nd WW my folks could only get it because of either price or simply that regular coffee wasn't available. And then you must have the rationing stamps and could only buy a certain amount. I was small then and didn't drink it, but I'll never forget them saying exactly the same things as has been said here. They were fussing about the chicoree taste for awhile, but then after drinking it for awhile, they didn't complain any more, just drank it anyway. ;) Is that not where we are now headed again ? Or worse ?

Community Coffee is quite popular and has chickory in it. Plain chickory isn't remotely coffee. I would have to think of it like 'tea' or 'postum' -- not coffee, just a drink.

Processed foods, the stuff wrapped in aluminum mylar plastic packages. I used to eat like potato chips until I saw saw their cost per pound was about the same as steak. I figure the extra time I spend cooking healthy real food I am paying myself a good wage on what I have saved.

Yes. And you will be buying "in-season" as well, because that's when you get the best price per pound. A nice garden salad, or slaw, or something like homemade corn relish, works with a sandwich just as well as chips and it's a lot more nutrition for your money. But not the "salad" in the plastic bags!

To get off topic for a moment..... :)
Have you ever noticed how badly those salad mixes stink when you first open the bag? And that's with bags that have many days to go before the "Use By" date. Then, when you dump out the contents, there's usually rotten bits that were left after the greens were cleaned. I tried them for a while and gave up in disgust, not only at the condition, but what I was having to pay for someone else to "wash" them for me. Especially since the first thing I did was to wash the pre-washed greens myself.
Back to coffee. :) Bought a pound of Lusianne with Chiory (sp) to try it again. That's the coffee my parents used when I finally got old enough to have a cup of coffee for breakfast, too. :yes2:
Back then, it was socially acceptable to sip hot coffee from a saucer. (If the coffee was too hot to drink, pour some in the saucer to cool it.) Remember begging for a saucer, too and getting the response that I wasn't old enough to drink coffee.
When I open the Lusianne, think I'll tip a saucer in memory of my Dad.

Yesterday I was checking online for staples that I usually buy at Sams club. I checked the price of the 48oz can of Folgers coffee, is still $9 and some change. That is up from 2 years ago, yes. That is about what I was paying middle of last summer. Also the prices of sugar (25 lb) and flour (25 lb) were about the same as well. I have to wonder if some stores are not gauging a lil bit on their prices when they hear that there is some shortage or is the price actually going up that much on them. Also the price of the 4 lb packs of butter has remained unchanged since summer. But I did notice at the last part of November coffee had gone up alot at a Kroger store and the cans were smaller. Kinda makes ya wonder, dont it?
Have a great day!

As a matter of fact.....YES.
Quit using bagged stuff years ago, and on the rare occasion that I go out to dinner, I ask the server if the salad comes in a bag.....and if it does, I have the soup!!
You have to wash the 'pre washed' salad to get the 'plastic smell' and whatever gas they put in there to keep it "green". Gross. Gross. Gross.
Going to the grocery today, will come back and let you know how much coffee is going for here in Central Indiana.
PS: Not quitting anything just yet.....that's on hold!!
