It really depends on what you are wanting to do. IF you want to cool the whole house the central air is cheaper if you already have a forced air furnace. My nephew and I have close to the same square footage for houses his is a little newer and tighter for air leaks than mine. I have a forced air furnace with central air where he has hot water base board heat. So he's using 3 window units to cool his house. His electric bill is always more than mine in any give cooling month. And comes almost twice my electric bill. *Even though my house isn't as tight or well insulated as his. Now if you just wanted to cool one room a window unit would be the cheapest.

Keep in mind that window units come in both 115v and 220v. 220v units are cheaper to run, it has to do with voltage and amp draw. If you have a lardge house that most of it is not used then a large window ot thrut the wall unit in 220 may be cheaper, this is more noticeable in 2 story homes with bedrooms upstairs. The central unit has to work harder to keep upper floors cool.

Window AC is cheaper because you only cool the room you need cool. CA is more convenient.
